Score the orange around the middle, cutting all the way through the peel. Try not to cut very into the fruit itself. Next, take the handle of a soup spoon and wedge it between the fruit and the peel and work your way around the fruit, separating as you go. Do the same on the other half.
Place your thumb into the space in one half, holding the other half in the same palm. Twist the peel and the rest of the orange in opposite directions, back and forth using your thumb to help release the peel. Di the same for the other half.
