The “House like village” project in Amsterdam

“House like village” is a very interesting and unique space located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It’s actually a loft with a very original internal structure. The whole space was designed by Marc Koehler Architects and the project was completed in 2011.The 160 square meter loft has been structured like a series of small houses inside a larger house.

The concept is interesting and unusual. The name of the project is very suggestive for the way the loft is divided. It’s like a miniature village in there. The loft has small streets that divide different areas and a series of compartimentalized spaces, each with its own function. They serve for different types of actions such as playing, partying, washing, working or relaxing. The idea seems logical. This way there’s a space designed specifically for the type of activity you plan on doing.

Instead of designing a large flexible space, the architects created a series of distinctive areas that serve their own purpose. The streets that separate these areas also have the function of carrying daylight into the center of the loft. The loft was designed for a young couple with a baby on the way. They have very clear requests. They wanted this space to represent the way they live and the way they interact. They spent a lot of time planning everything but the results were more than satisfying.{found on archdaily and pictures by Marcel van der Burg}.
