Old oil mill turned into family residence with backyard lap pool

This beautiful and inviting residence seems like a very friendly and charming home. It’s located in Nimes, southern France and it’s very chic and stylish. However, the residence has an interesting history. The building actually dates back to the 19th century and it used to be an old oil mill. That was until interior designer Marie-Laure Helmkampf transformed it and turned it into this charming residence.

Because of the structure and the poor state of the oil mill, everything had to be rebuilt. The building, now a residence was rebuilt with a more solid foundation and with a design reminiscent of the original architecture of the building.

In order to do that, the designer decided to use some of the old materials that were then repurposed. They include elements such as the solid beams and the stone walls. The façade is quite similar to that of the original mill. The interior, however, had to go through some major changes.

The internal structure was drastically changed. The rooms feature towering ceilings and large iron framed windows that hold the charm and character of the old mill. Still, the building had to be transformed in order to become a cozy and inviting place to live in.

The social areas such as the living room, dining room, kitchen and study have been decorated with neutral color tones and complemented by wooden elements that add warmth to the décor. The furniture is a combination of contemporary and vintage pieces that reflect the story of the house and its passage from an old oil mill to a modern family home.
