A Penthouse That Celebrates London With A Cutting-Edge Design

The Night and Day Penthouse was designed by London-based studio Daniel Hopwood. Founded back in 1993, the studio is a multi-disciplinary practice composed of interior designers, architects and landscape architects and all their creativity was put to the test with this project.

The apartment had to reflect the client’s enthusiasm for celebrating his time in London. So the team decided to go with a cutting edge design, simple, modern and stylish. Since this bachelor pad was designed for parties, they used resilient materials and finishes.

The living room has a large sofa, floor-to-ceiling windows and a color palette that’s dark and resilient. The room offers beautiful views, especially at night. The light is subtle and this creates a comfortable and welcoming vibe. A shaggy area rug and a set of accent pillows introduce pattern and texture into the room.

Since there’s not a lot of need for storage in here, elements such as the bookshelves themselves becomes design accents.

The dining area is refined and eclectic. A custom designed table made of reclaimed wood gets reflected in the polished steel ceiling. A set of Bertoia side chairs is complemented by antique French armchairs covered in patterned fabric.

The ambiance is romantic at night, when the mood lighting defined the space. During the day, the large glass walls and windows reveal a totally different space.

Suddenly, the armchairs look a lot more intricate and detailed, the colors are brighter and the pendant lights also become a focal point along with the ceiling.

The kitchen features raw copper accents. The cement tiles are designed to create a repetitive pattern and an interesting visual effect at the same time. The overall sleek, cutting edge design is occasionally complemented by reclaimed wood elements.

The kitchen island with seating features a very thin bar top which cantilevers over it. Not only that this contrast of materials and finishes makes the kitchen stand out, but the accent lighting was also expertly used to highlight these details.

The social areas open onto a terrace/ balcony. Out here there’s a long storage bench and a bright orange table with matching chairs that only stand out during the day, when the light reveals the bold colors.

The bedroom is soothing and cozy. A shaggy turquoise rug gives it an extra welcoming feel. The back accent wall is actually wallpapered, the intention being to create a comfortable ambiance by introducing the idea of wood wall paneling.

The hallway and entrance also feature wallpapered walls, although this detail becomes obvious here. Thanks to the repetitive pattern and the contrast of colors.
