Two-storey contemporary home with a beautiful view

The Carillo Residence is a two-story contemporary home located in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, USA. It was designed for a young couple and their two children and the objective was to create a space that could be both formal and informal, casual and elegant. The residence was a project by California-based design studio Ehrlich Architects and it has been recently completed. The Carillo Residence sits on a long narrow site and it offers beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.

The shape and orientation of the house were dictated by the site. The architects designed a house with the ground floor covered in stone and with a white box floating above this level. The box contains the bedrooms and was strategically placed on top so that it could offer panoramic views of the Santa Monica Canyon. On one end of the residence is the living room. It’s a spacious volume with glass walls that also divided the outdoor space into two courts. One is the informal front court where the children can safely play and that’s adjacent to the family area while the other is the formal rear court that includes an outdoor dining area, a barbeque are and an infinity-edge pool.

The residence is contrasting from this point of view. There’s always this delimitation between formal and informal spaces. Another interesting element is the permanent connection between the indoor and outdoor areas. The living room and the dining room could be easily made a part of the rear court. Moreover, the living room’s glass walls allow expansive views of the canyon. Inside, there’s also a clear delimitation between the formal adult areas and the informal family spaces. They are separated by the play area that can be closed off.{images by Barry Schwartz.}.
