Spacious Loft In Prague Highlighted By Industrial Design Features

When renovating a space or when getting ready to move into a new place it doesn’t all go as planned. The natural response is to deal with the challenges and to find solutions for all the problems. You never know what could go wrong. Before they even moved in here, the owners of this stylish apartment from Prague were faced with an issue that pretty much changed all the plans they had for the place, design-wise. Luckily, the architects at smlxl were ready to deal with everything the apartment threw at them.

The main problem here was the fact that those large industrial windows that the owners fell in love with in the first place were replaced with new ones made of plastic by the time the structure was finished. This meant they had lost one of the key features they had based their initial design ideas on. The plan changed and the new design focuses on restoring the industrial ambiance while at the same time suppressing the impact of the windows.

Right from the start, the owners wanted their new apartment to be interesting and to contain certain atypical design elements without becoming cluttered with all sorts of little details. It’s part of the reason why they valued the windows so much. Given the fact that this is a corner apartment in central Prague, the windows, whatever their design may be, play an important role in the overall look and ambiance of the place.

In order to bring back the industrial charm of the apartment, the architects decided to expose certain structural elements and to to emphasize the role of concrete as one of the main materials in this project. As a result, this 120 square meter apartment features elements such as visible columns and ceiling beams, flooring made of two different materials and an eye-catching concrete island with suspended swing seats which are all dominant features.

The main color of the interior design and decor is white and although the exposed concrete elements are dominant features, this material and its grey hue are only used marginally throughout the project. This allows the apartment to have a clean and light look. This applies to the design of the social areas. The private spaces, however, have a darker appearance. In here, the desire was to create a relaxing and cozy ambiance.

The nursery room is another exception, being the only space where the main color is not neutral. The pastel blue is incorporated into the decor in various different forms, being enhances by white and grey accents.
