They Didn’t Touch the White Cabinets. Dark Green Changed the Kitchen Instead
White cabinets covered most of this rental kitchen, with gray counters, stainless steel appliances, and bare white walls filling the remaining space. Reddit user u/shockwavelol kept those permanent surfaces in place and changed the narrow strip of wall between the counters and upper cabinets.

Dark green now runs through the kitchen from the sink to the range, but the new surface isn’t ceramic tile. Smart Tiles peel-and-stick sheets created the backsplash for about $400 CAD, with installation taking around five hours.
White Cabinets and Bare Walls Blended Together

White slab-front cabinets extended across the upper and lower sections of the original kitchen. Bare white walls filled the space above the gray counters, leaving the countertop and stainless steel range to provide most of the contrast.
Changing the cabinets would have meant taking on the largest surface in a rental kitchen. Instead, the existing white fronts stayed untouched, along with the counters, appliances, flooring, and layout.
Gray Counters Provided Most of the Contrast

Seen from the opposite end, the same palette continued toward the sink. White upper cabinets sat above a long bare wall, while the gray countertop created a narrow break between the upper and lower cabinet runs.
No backsplash connected the sink and cooking zones or separated the white cabinets from the white wall. That empty strip became the focus of the update rather than the cabinetry surrounding it.
Color Came From Objects, Not the Kitchen

Near the sink, cutting boards, plants, bottles, and other counter items supplied most of the color. Behind them, the wall remained white from the countertop to the upper cabinets and around the window.
Keeping the permanent finishes neutral left room for one darker surface to have a large impact. Instead of spreading color across cabinet doors or counters, the project concentrated it on the backsplash.
Dark Green Changed the Space Between the Cabinets

Deep green now fills the wall behind the range and continues beneath the upper cabinets. Small staggered rectangles create the appearance of a tiled backsplash, introducing a dark horizontal band between the white cabinetry and gray counter.
No mortar or grout was required. u/shockwavelol used Smart Tiles peel-and-stick sheets with raised sections that project past the grout lines, giving the surface more depth than a flat printed pattern.
White Cabinets Look Different Against the Green

Finished kitchen still has the same white cabinet fronts, gray countertops, stainless steel appliances, and narrow layout. Dark green behind the work surfaces changes the contrast around those existing elements without covering them.
Instead of white cabinets disappearing into a white wall, their edges now stand against a much darker background. The backsplash also connects separate stretches of counter, making the green read as one continuous element through the room.
Peel-and-Stick Created the Small-Tile Effect

Closer to the sink, the backsplash reveals the small rectangular pattern and subtle variation between the green sections. The sheets extend down to the counter and continue around the work area rather than appearing as a short decorative panel.
Installation wasn’t as simple as pressing sheets onto a straight wall. u/shockwavelol said surfaces in the kitchen weren’t level, and the adhesive grabbed the paint once a tile was placed, making repositioning difficult. The full project took about five hours.
Backsplash Held Up Beside the Range

Peel-and-stick material beside a stove raises an obvious question about heat, while the section behind the sink has to contend with repeated water splashes. Both areas put the adhesive close to conditions that can test a backsplash.
Follow-up updates from u/shockwavelol reported no issues near either location despite frequent cooking and water hitting the tiles around the sink. Months later, another update said the backsplash was still holding up without problems.
