Ever wondered how life in a tiny home would be like? Spoiler – it’s actually not that bad, not if space is well organized and the interior design maximizes the rooms in ways that don’t get in the way of looks and style. A wonderful example which supports all of this is a small loft apartment located in Northern Amsterdam.
The kitchen and loft bed are merged into a single large unit built out of birch wood
It only measures 45 square meters across but its 3,4-meter ceiling height works wonderfully in its favor. The apartment was remodeled in 2018 and the project was a collaboration between architecture studio Heren 5 and furniture designer Paul Timmer.
The kitchen island matches the storage unit and loft bed area, maintaining a harmonious aestheticEven though the sleeping area is practically on top of the kitchen, it has a lot of privacyThe combination of birch wood and white Corian gives the apartment a modern and clean aesthetic
The apartment is located on the ground floor of the building and its floor plan was strategically organized, placing the common areas by the large windows where they get lots of sunlight and a nice view while the private spaces are hidden out of sight. A really cool feature of this apartment is the little sleeping area which sits just above the kitchen. It can be accessed via a slender staircase to the right of the kitchen module and it takes advantage of the high ceiling in a very practical and cool way.
The sleeping area can be accessed via a sleek and sculptural staircase with an origami-like designThe sofa is placed on a platform, facing the staircase and the dining area is on its left side
This loft bed isn’t the only one that this small apartment has. There’s an extra one which can be pulled out from under the platform, the one below the staircase. It stays hidden most of the time and is only used when guests stay over.
With the bedroom cleverly hidden, the rest of the apartment is just a spacious living areaA custom built storage unit covers almost the entire wall, with a white front that lets it blend inAlthough the palette of colors and materials is small and limited mostly to neutrals, the apartment has a lot of characterThe platform on which the sofa is placed hides an extra bed inside of itThe furniture throughout the apartment was custom designed and looks very simple yet also very stylishA lot of attention was given to the little details, the elements that don’t stand out yet define the apartmentThe large windows bring in lots of natural light and expose the common areas to the viewThe gray floor and white counters complement the light wood furniture is a very harmonious wayThe bed under the platform can be pulled out, creating an extra bedroom for the guests
