If you like birds and you don’t mind them in your garden then perhaps it would be nice to draw them a bit closer and offer them a few features which they too can enjoy. For example, you could make a bird bath out of a couple of planters. The smaller one goes inside the bigger planter and the tray is placed on top. You can add some soil and a few plants or flowers around the edge to create a nicer environment for the birds. Check out the tutorial on mamitalks.

Accent walls are very common in indoor spaces like living rooms or bedrooms and you can also incorporate the same idea when you’re decorating outdoor areas like a garden or a backyard patio. This right here is a tin accent wall with an industrial feel but it’s possible to use a different material if you prefer a different style. For more details, head over to craftytexasgirls.

Even something as small and simple as a doormat can be reinvented and turned into a cool project. This one for example is made out of a garden hose. It’s definitely unusual and it looks rather quirky as well. The project is quite simple and if you’re interested in finding out more details about it there’s a tutorial on markkintzel which you can follow.

A fire pit is a cool feature for the garden or the backyard. You can have a bunch of chairs placed around it to create a cozy sitting area for family and friends and when you’re not actually using the fire pit as intended you could put a top on it and turn it into a table. We came across this clever idea on thehandmadehome and we love it.

Not all gardens are big open spaces. Some are not really gardens at all. A few planters are typically enough to create a green area, whether it’s indoor or outdoor. If you lack space on the floor for them, hang them on a wall and create a vertical display. This right here is a little patio garden which can be set up in just a few hours. This could be your next weekend project. Check out designwinedine for details.

You can also have a lot of fun coming up with various designs for your garden beds and all the plants. Consider using rocks and pebbles to make raised plant beds and various other structures. Here they’re arranged in a spiral pattern giving this vegetable garden a modern and eye-catching look. Check out ohmy-creative to find out how this was done.

Another project idea is to make your own custom planters or planter boxes for flowers, herbs or vegetables. You could have two or three combined to create a tiered garden and you can place them on the porch, indoors or even in the garden among other plants. These planter boxes are made of cedar wood and there’s a tutorial on homebyjenn which explains how they’re made.

A garden could also use some decorations. There are a lot of different options in this case but one of our favorite projects comes from lucydesignsonline. Here you can find out how to make these amazing dragonfly decorations using table legs and ceiling fan blades. They can be attached to trees, fences or walls and they stand out a lot.

A fairy garden is another gorgeous project, an excellent one if you’re short on space or you don’t have an actual outdoor garden. You can make all of this out of a large planter which oddly enough needs to have a section taken out of it. If you already have a broken planter that would work out perfectly. The piece that you’re taking out will become a retaining wall for the miniature garden inside. You can add all sorts of adorable decorations like figurines, miniature fences and furniture and so on. Check out restorationredoux for more inspiration.

A wine barrel can also be recycled and turned into something beautiful, like a tiered planter for your favorites flowers or herbs. a few modifications have to be made to the barrel of course and you’re also going to need some additional pieces of wood which could come from a pallet. Use them to create multiple tiers and sections for the plants to go into. More info about this project can be found on centsationalstyle.

An old tire might not look like something you’d want to put up on a wall or display on your patio but you can definitely change that. One of the best ways to recycle a tire is by turning it into a planter. There’s a tutorial on diyshowoff which explains exactly how this is done. It involves spray paint, soil, weed barrier fabric and your favorite plants or flowers.

A big pumpkin can also be turned into a planter and all you need to do is cut off the top and then remove everything inside the pumpkin, leaving it nice and clean. Place a container or a planter inside with soil and then add the plants. This works out nicely with succulents but other types of plants can be used as well. It’s a great autumn project if you plan on using a real pumpkin. Check out the rest of the details on craftsbyamanda.

As you know, you can add rocks to your garden as decorations. However, what you might now know is that you can paint the rocks to make them look extra cute and colorful. These ones are blue with little daisies painted on them and they look lovely. If you want to make something similar you’ll need acrylic paint and brushes. Also, check out craftsbyamanda for instructions.

A lot of things can be upcycled into planters, even if it may seem like an odd idea at first. For example, you might not think an antique lantern could be used in this way but check out how gorgeous these hanging planters featured on acraftymix are. The pulley looks amazing as well and that too can be something you craft yourself.

An old wheelbarrow is not really of much use in the garden, unless you use it in a creative and unexpected way. You could place it on the side and add a bunch of soil to make it look as if it spilled out and then you can plant lots of cute little flowers which can grow all around the wheelbarrow. This cool idea comes from thehoneycombhome.

Another unusual thing that you can turn into a planter is an old laundry basket. It doesn’t really matter if it’s cracked or doesn’t look good because you’ll be wrapping it in burlap fabric anyway. You can use glue to attach the burlap to the basket and once that part is done you can wrap a piece of rope around it and make a cute bow or a knot at the front. You can find more details on elizabethjoandesigns if you’re interested.

It’s nice for small spaces and there are a lot of different ways in which you can potentially customize this piece.  Check out the tutorial on mylove2create for more details.

If you have an old dining chair that you no longer need or that’s no longer in tone with your interior decor, take it outside and turn it into a planter. It’s quite simple really. You need to cut out a hole into the seat, big enough for a planter to fit without falling all the way through. Of course, you can also paint the chair and add all sorts of other details as well. Head over to paintedtherapy for more details.
