She Turned a Plain 5-Gallon Bucket Into a Giant Pumpkin Planter With One Unexpected Material
The pumpkin shape comes from something that spends most of the year in a pool, not on a front porch. Cut into sections, pool noodles give a plain 5-gallon bucket the deep rounded ribs seen on the finished planter.
Creator Alex of @alexmariecreates used three regular pool noodles and three thick ones, with each cut into 16½-inch pieces. Mixing the two widths breaks up the surface and makes the bucket resemble an oversized pumpkin instead of a foam-covered container.
The bright noodle colors disappear under primer and orange paint, while a black jack-o’-lantern face completes the shift. Fall flowers fill the bucket left inside, turning the hidden structure into part of the finished planter.
Pool Noodles Give the Bucket a New Shape
The project starts with a plain bucket and pool noodles in several colors and widths. The bucket provides the rigid center and leaves an open cavity for flowers, while the foam supplies the shape missing from its straight sides.
Alex cuts the noodles lengthwise, then divides them into 16½-inch pieces. She reports getting six pieces from each noodle.
Cut Sections Become Pumpkin Ribs
Each foam section sits against the outside wall with its curved edge facing out. Set around the full circumference, the pieces turn the bucket’s smooth cylinder into a series of deep vertical lobes.
Using regular and thick noodles keeps those lobes from sharing one width. The variation gives the form more depth while the bucket keeps every section on the same round path.
Primer Erases the Pool-Aisle Colors
Pink, green, orange, and blue foam still exposes the planter’s origins after assembly. White primer begins covering those colors without flattening the curves underneath.
Once coated, the individual pieces start reading as parts of one form. Their rounded faces remain visible, while the bright foam colors no longer compete with the pumpkin shape.
Orange Paint Turns the Pool Noodles Into a Jack-o’-Lantern
KILZ primer creates a white base over the bright noodle colors before orange paint covers the ribbed form. The rounded foam remains visible beneath the finish, while narrow gaps between each section resemble the grooves of an oversized pumpkin.
Black triangles and a curved mouth stretch across the raised ribs to form the jack-o’-lantern face. A Sharpie Creative Marker adds the dark details, completing the transformation from pool supplies to fall porch decor.
Paint Turns the Foam Ribs Into a Jack-o’-Lantern
Orange paint covers the primed body, while narrow recesses between the pieces preserve the ribbed effect. What looked like separate foam strips now resembles the lobes of one oversized pumpkin.
Black triangles and a curved mouth cross those raised sections to form the face. Alex lists a Sharpie Creative Marker among the materials used for the project.
Flowers Fill the Bucket Hidden Inside
A dense arrangement of orange faux stems fills the open center and spreads past the rim. The flowers conceal the bucket opening while adding height above the wide pumpkin body.
The original container still serves its first purpose: holding something. Instead of replacing the bucket, the project changes what anyone sees around it.
Porch Placement Reveals How Big It Is
Placed beside a tall Halloween sign, lantern, and boots, the finished planter has enough scale to anchor a porch corner. The broad flower arrangement pushes the display higher without covering the face below.
The surprise sits under the paint. Those deep pumpkin ribs come from pool noodles wrapped around a bucket, turning two common utility items into a porch piece that looks built for fall.
