This project from Brittney Smart started with a wood desk that had years of wear across the work surface but a base that could stay in use.

Instead of removing the wood top or adding a concrete slab, Smart resurfaced the existing desktop with thin coats of Ardex Feather Finish, sanding between layers before sealing the surface. The result looks like a concrete top, but the original wood remains underneath.

The desk started with a broad wood top mounted across two drawer units. Its base had already been painted, but the desktop still showed scratches, white marks, worn edges, and changes in the wood finish.

Keeping the top meant the desk dimensions, drawers, and structure could remain in place. The work focused on covering the wood rather than dismantling the furniture.

Old residue on the desktop needed attention before the new material went on. A putty knife helped remove material stuck to the wood, while sanding and cleaning prepared the surface for the coating.

Large holes also needed to be filled. Since the finish would follow the shape of the existing desktop, surface prep helped prevent old damage from showing through the new coats.

Smart mixed Ardex Feather Finish with water until it reached a consistency between pudding and putty. The mixture needed enough body to stay on the desk while remaining workable with a putty knife.

Unlike a poured concrete top, this method uses a thin cement-based layer spread over the existing surface. That keeps the wood top underneath and avoids adding a thick slab.

Application started along the front and side edges. Smart spread the mixture with a putty knife, covering the exposed wood and carrying the finish around the perimeter.

Extra material went near corners where two planes meet. Those areas would lose more material during sanding, so the added thickness left room to shape the edges without exposing the wood below.

Once the first coat covered the top, the surface had visible trowel lines, ridges, and changes in tone. That uneven look was part of the process rather than a finished surface.

Feather Finish sets fast, so Smart worked across sections of about one square foot at a time. Each section could be spread before the material became too firm to move with the putty knife.

After the material dried, sanding removed high spots and rough edges. It did not erase every swipe or tonal shift, which helped retain the appearance associated with hand-finished concrete.

Smart used medium- to fine-grit sandpaper and repeated the process after each coat. The goal was a surface that felt smooth even when marks from the application remained visible.

Later coats filled gaps and reduced the contrast between individual sections. Smart recommends coating the full desktop each time rather than repairing isolated areas, since separate batches of Feather Finish can have slight differences in tone.

The project called for three to five coats, with each one allowed to dry before sanding and adding the next. The original wood remained underneath every layer.

Once the final coat had dried and been sanded, concrete sealer went over the surface. The sealer created the slight sheen visible across the finished edge and helped protect the cement-based coating from desk use.

Smart recommends at least two coats of sealer for a desktop. Surfaces exposed to more water would need more protection.

The finished desk still uses the original drawer bases, center drawer, and wood top, but the brown desktop has disappeared beneath a gray concrete-look surface. White paint across the base creates a sharp break between the desk structure and its new top.

Computer equipment, a printer, lamp, and office supplies return to the same footprint, showing that the project changed the surface without changing how the desk functions.

From the side, the thin coating follows the original top instead of making the desk look as though a slab was placed over it. The front edge keeps its narrow profile, while marks in the finish prevent the surface from reading as flat gray paint.
