This Plain Powder Room Ditched White Walls for Dark Paneling and Floral Wallpaper
Reddit user u/ProfessorFun4568 and her fiancé turned a plain powder room into their first major renovation after buying their house a year earlier. White walls, a pedestal sink, and open storage were replaced with brown paneling, floral wallpaper, a furniture-style vanity, and an arched wood cabinet.
The house was built in 2000, and the homeowner wanted to avoid what she called a “sterile cookie cutter vibe.” She chose traditional wallpaper, dark woodwork, secondhand furniture, and champagne bronze hardware while keeping the existing bathroom layout.
White Walls Defined the Original Powder Room
The original room had white walls, wood-look flooring, a pedestal sink, and a toilet tucked beneath an open wall cabinet. With no tile, wallpaper, paneling, or substantial trim, most of the design came from the fixtures.
The renovation kept the existing floor plan, placing the toilet and sink in the same parts of the room.
Dark Paint Samples Started the Remodel
Burgundy, red, and brown samples were tested across the white walls before the homeowner settled on the color used for the woodwork.
Some Reddit commenters expected the room to become red after seeing the samples, and the homeowner admitted she had concerns during this stage. The finished room uses brown across the paneling and trim, with wallpaper covering the upper walls.
Brown Paneling Wrapped the Lower Walls
Pre-cut paneling from Home Depot covers the lower half of the walls, with molding installed along the top. Both were painted brown, replacing the white wall surface from the floor to chair-rail height.
The same brown extends onto the baseboards and door trim, so the paneling reads as part of the room rather than an added strip along the wall. The homeowner said the panel installation was one of the easier parts of the project.
Floral Wallpaper Filled the Space Above the Paneling
McGee & Co. floral wallpaper covers the walls from the molding toward the ceiling. Its dark background, brown stems, muted green leaves, and pink flowers sit against the brown paneling without requiring the same color across every surface.
The homeowner first searched for peel-and-stick wallpaper but could not find a floral pattern she wanted. She chose traditional wallpaper instead and learned the installation from someone with experience, calling it the hardest part of the renovation.
A Secondhand Vanity Replaced the Pedestal Sink
The pedestal sink was replaced with a curved furniture-style vanity topped by a pale counter and inset basin. Carved detailing on the cabinet doors, feet, and upper trim adds another traditional element against the floral walls.
The homeowner found the vanity on Facebook Marketplace and sent her fiancé an hour away to collect it after struggling to find a new option in the size she needed. The large oval mirror above it also came from Marketplace.
Arched Storage Replaced the Open Cabinet
Above the toilet, the original white cabinet was replaced with an arched wood cabinet with glass doors and brass knobs. Shelves hold books, glassware, and small objects while the floral wallpaper remains visible behind the cabinet.
The homeowner bought the piece through Marketplace and later traced it to a cabinet sold through Amazon and Wayfair.
Brown Trim Connects the Two Wall Treatments
The brown paneling meets the floral wallpaper beneath a wide molding cap. Similar brown tones appear within the wallpaper pattern, while pink flowers and green foliage break up the dark background.
Rather than painting the entire powder room one color, the project combines painted millwork with patterned walls while keeping both within the same dark palette.
The Existing Layout Stayed in Place
The finished room still has the toilet at one end and the sink opposite it, with the wood-look flooring left in place. Most of the transformation came from the wall treatments and replacements for the original sink and cabinet.
Champagne bronze hardware appears at the sink and towel ring, while the gold-framed mirror adds another metal finish against the dark wallpaper. The homeowner said the towel hardware was champagne bronze and planned to replace the remaining mismatched door and toilet hardware.
Dark Finishes Didn’t Make the Small Room Feel Closed In
The finished powder room uses dark brown across the lower walls, trim, door, and storage, while the floral wallpaper carries similar tones above. White remains limited to the toilet, keeping one sharp contrast against the darker surfaces.
The small footprint gave the homeowners room to use a combination that might dominate a larger bathroom, turning the powder room into a place for pattern and deeper color rather than treating its size as a reason to keep everything pale.
