Most thrift store furniture makeovers rely on white, black, sage green, or natural wood finishes. This $19 Goodwill sideboard took a different direction. Instead of trying to hide its traditional shape, Instagram creator @shellychicboutique embraced it with a high-gloss hot pink finish that transformed one of the most dated pieces in the store into the focal point of an entire room.

The project follows a different path than a previous makeover where she stripped a thrifted dresser to reveal the natural wood grain underneath. In that transformation, the wood became the feature. This time, color became the feature.

The original sideboard featured dark wood tones, decorative door panels, ornate hardware, and a traditional profile.

Many shoppers would have passed it by in favor of something with cleaner lines. Shelly saw something different. The sturdy construction, balanced proportions, and three-door layout provided a strong foundation for a complete transformation.

Sanding Removed The Glossy Surface

Before paint could be applied, the existing finish needed preparation.

A quick scuff sanding dulled the glossy surface and created better adhesion for primer. The goal was not to strip the entire piece to bare wood but to create a surface ready for its new finish.

The sanding stage also softened some of the visual heaviness created by the dark stain.

Primer Changed The Look Almost Immediately

Once primer covered the sideboard, the transformation became easier to visualize.

The dark brown finish disappeared beneath a clean, neutral surface that highlighted the cabinet’s shape rather than its color. Details that previously blended into the stain became more noticeable.

Primer also provided an even base for the bold color that followed.

Bright Pink Replaced The Traditional Wood Finish

The biggest surprise arrived with the paint.

Instead of choosing a muted color, Shelly covered the sideboard in a vivid hot pink finish. Applied with a paint sprayer, the color coated the large flat surfaces, recessed panels, and trim details with consistent coverage.

The bright finish completely changed how the furniture was perceived. What looked traditional and dated in dark wood suddenly felt playful, modern, and impossible to ignore.

New Hardware Elevated The Finished Piece

The original hardware disappeared during the makeover.

In its place, geometric gold pulls introduced contrast against the pink finish. The updated hardware reinforced the more current direction of the project while adding a second layer of visual interest.

The combination of bright pink and gold transformed the sideboard from a thrift-store purchase into a statement furniture piece.

Color Became The Focal Point

Unlike the earlier dresser makeover, where exposed wood grain became the highlight, this project relied entirely on color.

The sideboard now anchors the room beneath oversized artwork, framed prints, and pink wall molding. Instead of blending into the background, it commands attention from across the space.

The makeover demonstrates that not every thrift store find needs natural wood or neutral paint. Sometimes the strongest transformation comes from choosing a color most people would never consider.

Would you have painted this sideboard a bold pink, or would you have chosen a more neutral finish?
