These Gray Kitchen Cabinets Hide a Refrigerator and a Walk-In Pantry Behind Matching Doors

Floor-to-ceiling gray cabinets cover one wall of this kitchen, with tall Shaker doors, polished metal handles, and drawers beneath. The arrangement suggests generous storage, yet two of those cabinet sections serve a different purpose. One conceals a refrigerator, while another opens into a walk-in pantry.

The rest of the kitchen offers another surprise. Instead of matching the gray cabinets, a dark wood island occupies the center, with rows of drawers, turned legs, a curved stone countertop, and open shelves at one end. It looks more like a substantial piece of furniture than a standard kitchen island.

Built by Instagram creator @bedrockbuildersic for its New England Tudor project in Iowa City, the kitchen combines custom cabinetry, panel-ready appliances, locally harvested walnut, and polished metal finishes. The hidden storage keeps the main cabinet wall uninterrupted, while the contrasting island introduces the woodwork that defines the room.

Tall Shaker doors reach from the lower drawers to a second row of cabinets near the ceiling. Long metal handles identify the central doors, while smaller pulls finish the surrounding storage. With everything closed, the wall resembles a conventional arrangement of fitted cabinets.

Opening the doors reveals two separate functions. The central panels conceal a stainless steel refrigerator with illuminated shelves and storage compartments inside its doors. Beside it, another cabinet-look door opens into a narrow walk-in pantry.

The pantry entrance occupies the right-hand section of the wall, beneath fixed overhead cabinets. Its door carries the same gray finish and recessed-panel detailing as the surrounding cabinetry.

Inside the pantry, open shelves occupy the end wall, while gray-green lower cabinets and a dark countertop run along the side. The shelves provide space for food and household supplies without adding another row of cabinet doors.

From the pantry entrance, the main kitchen remains visible through the passage. The hidden room is separate from the refrigerator enclosure, despite both entrances appearing as part of the same cabinet wall.

The stainless steel range sits beneath a white hood with a broad curved opening and substantial side supports. White marble with gray veining covers the backsplash, extending behind the range and along the adjacent wall.

Dark stone countertops sit above pale gray base cabinets. A narrow shelf beside the hood holds framed artwork, while the white-painted brick wall continues above it.

The cooking wall uses fewer upper cabinets than the concealed storage wall, leaving the hood and marble backsplash exposed.

Instead of repeating the perimeter cabinet finish, the island uses dark stained wood with visible grain and rows of drawers. Its stone countertop has a rounded end, supported by turned wooden posts and open curved shelves beneath.

The rounded shelves hold serving bowls, while the opposite side provides seating beneath two brass lantern pendants. The island’s furniture-style construction contrasts with the straight cabinet fronts surrounding it.

A wide black-framed window runs above the sink, with dark stone continuing across the counter and backsplash. Gray lower cabinets provide storage beneath the window, leaving the wall above free of conventional upper cupboards.

The island sits opposite this long counter, creating a passage between the sink and cooking areas. Its drawer-filled side faces the work zone, while the rounded end remains open toward the adjoining dining room.

Viewed from the dining side, the island’s curved stone edge follows the shape of the wooden base. Turned corner posts support the projecting top, while two rounded shelves fit between them.

Three upholstered stools line the opposite side, beneath two open-frame brass pendants. The combination of dark wood, curved shelves, and exposed legs gives the island a furniture-inspired profile without sacrificing the storage provided by its drawers.

The adjoining dining area introduces another cabinet finish. A long green-gray built-in combines arched display shelves, drawers, and a central section backed with dark wood.

The center has thicker wooden shelves, framed artwork, and its own brass light. Smaller objects occupy the painted side shelves, while multiple drawers provide closed storage beneath.

Unlike the concealed kitchen wall, this cabinet leaves much of its storage exposed as a display.

Wide plank wood flooring extends from the kitchen into the dining area. A dark rectangular dining table sits between the kitchen and glass doors opening toward the deck, with upholstered chairs around it.

The green-gray display cabinet occupies the opposite wall, creating a separate focal point without dividing the rooms.

From the dining table, the gray storage wall, dark island, and white cooking hood align along the length of the room. Brass lighting, dark window frames, and wood cabinetry provide contrast against the white walls and pale flooring.

The full kitchen view shows the different cabinet treatments together. Gray floor-to-ceiling storage lines one wall, a dark wood island occupies the center, and the sink counter extends beneath the large windows.

The refrigerator and walk-in pantry disappear behind matching Shaker doors, leaving the island to carry the room’s most distinctive wood details. Its curved countertop, turned posts, open shelves, and drawer fronts stand apart from the fitted cabinets without introducing another wall of storage.
