Kitchen backsplashes usually stop beneath the upper cabinets. This one continued all the way to the ceiling. In a renovation shared by Reddit user u/Ok-Cauliflower1001, glossy black herringbone tile replaced the blank wall around the range, turning the cooking area into the strongest visual feature in the kitchen.
Floating oak shelves balanced the single cabinet above the range while keeping the tile fully visible. White shaker cabinets, quartz countertops, black hardware, and simple styling completed the wall without adding more upper cabinetry.
The kitchen still has the same layout, cabinets, countertops, flooring, and appliances. Floor-to-ceiling tile and open shelving transformed one empty section of wall into a focal point that anchors the entire room.
Blank Walls Left the Range Isolated
Large sections of painted drywall surrounded the cooking area while a single upper cabinet floated above the range. Quartz countertops, white shaker cabinets, and black hardware already established the kitchen, yet the center section stopped before becoming part of the design.

Running the tile beyond the typical backsplash height changes the scale of the kitchen. Instead of ending beneath the cabinet, the pattern reaches the ceiling and gives the entire cooking wall a stronger architectural presence.
Floating Shelves Balanced the Cabinet
Oak shelves occupy the space that once remained empty on both sides of the center cabinet. Their natural finish introduces another material while leaving most of the herringbone pattern exposed behind bowls, cutting boards, ceramics, and small decorative objects.
The shelves also solve the visual imbalance created by the single cabinet above the range. Matching lengths on both sides widen the composition and keep the eye moving across the full tile installation instead of stopping at the cabinet.
