No Motor, No Crank: This Standing Desk Uses Pipe to Set the Height
Standing desks often depend on a lifting frame hidden beneath the top. Motors raise electric models, while other designs use a crank or preset adjustment points. This desk takes another route with a wood top and black iron plumbing pipe.
The build starts with two wood boards and a pipe frame assembled by hand. The woman making the desk cuts, sands, finishes, and joins the top before building two pipe supports beneath it. Different pipe lengths set the finished desk at 30, 42, or 48 inches, so the frame determines the height without adding a lifting mechanism.
Two Boards Form the Desktop
The top starts with two 2-by-12 boards cut to 5 feet 6 inches. A speed square guides the cut across the wide boards before the two pieces are joined.
Using two boards creates a broad work surface without requiring a single slab. The seam runs down the length of the finished top, with metal plates underneath holding both pieces together.
Sanding Rounds the Edges Before the Frame Goes On
An orbital sander removes the rough surface left on the boards and works across the edges and corners. The project starts with 100-grit sandpaper before moving to 220 grit.
Rounding the exposed edges matters on a desk this size because the front edge becomes the contact point for arms and hands. The sanding also prepares the bare wood for the finish added next.
Danish Oil Changes the Bare Wood Without Hiding the Grain
After the sanding dust comes off, natural Danish oil goes across the boards with a cloth. The side-by-side images show the change as the oil reaches the wood, deepening the tone while the knots and grain remain visible.
The finish also adds protection before the hardware and pipe frame are attached. At this stage, the boards remain separate pieces with no desk hardware on the upper surface.
Metal Plates Join the Two Boards From Below
Six 10-inch mending plates span the joint on the underside of the top. The outer plates sit about four inches from the ends, with the remaining plates distributed across the length.
The hardware stays underneath, leaving the upper face as wood from edge to edge. Once the plates are screwed into both boards, the two long pieces function as a single desktop.
Plumbing Pipe Forms Two Separate Supports
Black iron pipe replaces a standard desk frame. Straight pipe sections connect through tees, 90-degree elbows, couplings, flanges, and end caps to create two matching supports.
Each support has two tall vertical legs tied together with horizontal pipe. Short sections extend toward the center of the desk, creating another connection between the legs rather than leaving four independent posts beneath the top.
Flanges Fasten the Pipe Frame to the Wood
The two pipe supports sit near opposite ends of the desktop, with round flanges resting against the wood. Screws through each flange secure the metal frame to the underside.
The mending plates remain visible between the supports. The layout keeps the pipe assemblies away from the center of the top while spreading the attachment points across both boards.
Threaded End Caps Level the Four Legs
Once the desk stands upright, the bottom fittings provide a small adjustment point at each leg. Turning an end cap changes how that leg meets the floor, which helps when all four contact points do not sit at the same level.
This adjustment does not convert the desk from sitting to standing height. The larger height change comes from the vertical pipe sections used to build the frame.
Pipe Length Sets the Desk at 30, 42, or 48 Inches
Three versions of the pipe support show how the same frame changes height. The tallest configuration produces a 48-inch desk, the middle version reaches 42 inches, and the shortest creates a 30-inch desk.
The difference comes from the vertical pipe sections between the fittings. Longer sections raise the wood top, while shorter sections bring it down. Changing heights means changing pipe components rather than pressing a button or turning a crank.
Standing Height Leaves the Mechanism in Plain Sight
At standing height, the black pipe is not hidden beneath a cabinet or enclosed base. Vertical legs, elbows, tees, and crosspieces remain visible under the wood top and become part of the desk design.
The finished desk shows the tradeoff behind the simple frame. It cannot move between sitting and standing positions on demand, but its height can be set through the pipe configuration without a motor, crank, or dedicated adjustable desk base.
