DIY Modern X-Shaped Coaster Set

Coasters are essential for protecting tabletop surfaces, but they’re often clunky and boring, so why not create something that will not only rock at holding your drink, and is visually interesting too? The graphic “X” shape of these DIY coasters is created with pre-cut strips of balsa, a soft wood that eliminates the need for a saw. (Heavy-duty scissors are strong enough for the job!) Build a set for yourself this weekend, and replace those mundane coasters with a sculptural set that works overtime as modern art!

Materials you’ll need for modern coasters:

  • 1/4″ Thick balsa wood strips usually sold in a variety pack of wood strip sizes at the hardware store.
  • Ruler or T-square
  • Scissors
  • All-purpose glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Pencil
  • Black spray paint

How to craft the modern coasters:

1. Cut 2 strips of balsa wood roughly 4″ long each using sharp heavy-duty scissors. Use a straight edge to mark the middle of each strip.

2. Place a dot of all-purpose glue onto the center of one strip, and place the other strip on top, matching up the center marks from step one, and forming an “X” shape. Allow to dry.

3. Place another 1/4″ strip next to one “leg” of the “X” and mark the length with a pen or pencil. Cut the strip at this mark.

4. Glue the strip you cut in step 3 to the leg of the “X”. Press together tightly, and wipe off any excess glue.

5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 three more times until the “X” is flush on both sides.

6. Repeat steps 1-5 three more times to create a total of 4 coasters. Sand down any rough edges.

7. Coat coasters with black spray paint. I did 2 coats on each side. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Note: The large “X” shown is a pot holder, created the exact same way as the coasters only with 8″ strips of balsa wood (1/4″ thick).
