Merate Residence – Contemporary Living Within Botta’s Architecture
In Merate, m2atelier has reimagined a private residence within one of Mario Botta’s distinctive buildings, shaping a home that pairs strong architectural geometry with a softer, more livable interior.
The design works with Botta’s monumental forms, introducing glass-wrapped dining spaces, open living areas, and landscaped terraces that extend the rooms outward.
The layout spans four levels. The ground floor connects communal areas to outdoor seating and garden spaces, while the basement is dedicated to wellness, with a sauna, wine cellar, and fitness room. The first floor is reserved for the owners, featuring a master suite with circular skylights, porthole windows, and custom cabinetry. The top floor houses guest suites with private terraces.
Custom furniture, integrated millwork, and a restrained material palette tie the spaces together. Lighting and finishes are selected to enhance proportions and textures, creating a cohesive environment that respects Botta’s architecture while offering the warmth and functionality of a modern home.
