Instead of a Stone Retaining Wall, This One Was Built With Stacked Landscape Timbers
Retaining a raised garden beside a patio often calls for stone or concrete blocks, especially when the ground drops several feet from one side of the planting bed to the other. Reddit user u/petra-ichor took another route, stacking landscape timbers to create the retaining face between the concrete patio and the lower path.
Cost played a role in the material choice. The builder said the client could not afford an $8,000 concrete retaining wall, while materials for the timber version came to about $750 CAD and the completed job cost $2,500. The change kept the raised planting area in place without surrounding the patio with a thick masonry wall.
Stone Creates a Permanent Retaining Edge Around a Change in Grade
Stone retaining walls can hold planting beds above driveways, paths, and patios while becoming part of the surrounding hardscape. Large blocks create the retaining face, with their depth and weight taking up more space than a row of landscape timbers.
For a smaller residential grade change, does the retaining edge need to become such a dominant part of the yard? Timber offers another approach, using long horizontal members to create a defined edge while keeping the wall face narrow beside the space below.
Stacked Landscape Timbers Hold the Garden Above the Lower Path

Rows of landscape timbers form the retaining face along two sides of the garden, with overlapping ends locking the corner together and structural screws connecting the wood. The upper course sits close to soil level, so the wall also becomes the border between the planted bed, concrete patio, lawn, and lower gravel path.
Support extends behind the wood rather than relying on the visible stacked courses alone. The builder said every other layer connects to buried landscape ties, with five tie-back layers running behind the wall, while one-inch gravel was installed along the sides of the ties to provide a route for water through the retained area.

Timber does change the maintenance equation compared with stone or concrete. Wood held against retained soil faces repeated moisture exposure, so drainage behind the wall and irrigation placement matter as much as the visible construction. Keeping water from collecting against the timbers can slow decay, but a wood retaining wall should still be expected to have a different service life from a masonry structure.
For this patio, that tradeoff produced a retaining wall from a material that also works as the garden border. Instead of a row of stone blocks separating the two elevations, stacked timbers continue around the corner and contain the planted area without taking much space from the path below.
