Empty Backyard Turned Into a Multi-Level Patio With a Sunken Fire Pit

In a project shared by Reddit user u/AirportCarpet, a family transformed the property into connected outdoor living spaces organized around a sunken fire pit. Curved retaining walls, expansive paver patios, planting beds, drainage improvements, and fresh sod divided one open lawn into distinct areas for dining, gathering, and play while preserving generous green space.
Large Lawn Offered Plenty of Space but No Purpose
Wide grass lawn stretched behind the house with few defined activity areas. Existing concrete patio handled outdoor dining while most of the yard remained unused.
Tall evergreen trees screened neighboring properties, but open lawn lacked structure. Small fire pit and scattered shrubs failed to organize the large footprint into usable spaces.
Existing Patio Ended Abruptly at the Lawn
