Preparing the home for a new baby takes time, planning but also a creative mind. A newborn baby doesn’t really care about style or anything else really so all those cute and sophisticated baby room ideas that you want to use as inspiration are actually for everyone but the baby. That being said, this doesn’t mean you should completely ignore the looks. It’s important to find the balance between aesthetic appeal and functionality.
Some things, like the changing table, are a must-have for a nursery room. Others are just accessories meant to make the room pretty and to give it character. Whether it’s a baby girl or a baby boy’s room, the important elements are almost always the same ones. A nursery needs a crib, lots of functional storage and a soothing color palette.
When choosing the colors for the nursery room we suggest going with pastels. They’re soothing and best suited for a baby’s first months, a period of accommodation and learning about the world and the surroundings. You can choose the colors based on gender so for example a baby girl’s room can be decorated with shades of pink and lavender and a baby boy’s room can feature tones of blue. Some colors are more neutral and also a bit more unexpected. Green, yellow and even coral, gray or turquoise can fit into this category.
When choosing a pastel color, make sure it’s not too bold but not too pale either. You want it to be just right so it looks pleasing to the eye but it also stands out and tie the rest of the decor together harmoniously. You can play with different shades of the same color for a dynamic effect.
Let’s say you have all the furniture and accessories needed for the nursery. Now you need to figure out how to put everything in the room. Our most important suggestion is to avoid clutter. You definitely don’t want to trip over a misplaced table, a chair or toys on the floor when you’re carrying the baby or when you’re in a hurry.
When all the big and important elements are in place you can start adding all the little missing details. Now is the time to be creative and to focus on that theme you’ve chosen for the room, if you chose one. You can add all sorts of details such as some nice window treatments, a canopy for the crib, some framed pictures or artwork on the walls and of course some adequate lighting. A suggestion that we often encountered is to install curtains or window shades so you can mimic nighttime during the day for a more comfortable sleeping experience.
There are a lot of ways in which to make a baby room decor unique and interesting. You can decorate the walls with wallpaper (make sure it’s washable – accidents happen), with decals or murals. The ceiling can be painted too. Stripes are great because they’re simple, elegant and timeless but you can also go with a polka dot pattern which is also cute and lovely.
At the end, when everything comes together, the big picture starts to form and it all gets real. Hopefully, a harmonious image will form, one that both the baby and the parents can be happy with, each for different reasons. But don’t get too comfortable with this feeling because soon enough you’ll have to redecorate. Babies grow fast and before you know it you’ll be decorating a teen’s room.
