Years of Dirt Disappeared From These Stone Paths and Patios After One Deep Cleaning
Stone patios and garden paths gradually lose their original appearance as dirt, algae, and surface stains build up over time. What looks like dark gray or almost black paving may actually hide a surprising range of natural colors beneath the surface.
Photos shared by Reddit user u/Various-Chemical9327 show how dramatically natural stone changed after a deep cleaning. Once years of buildup were removed, shades of pink, beige, tan, and gray reappeared, making some sections look like completely different paving despite being the same stone all along.
Covered Patio Revealed Colors Hidden Beneath the Surface

The largest transformation took place on the main patio beside the house.
Before cleaning, most of the paving appeared dark and uniform. Afterward, individual stones displayed a range of natural colors and mineral patterns that had been difficult to see beneath the buildup. Pink, beige, gray, and tan tones became visible throughout the surface.
Individual Pavers Became Easier to Distinguish

Cleaning restored contrast between the stones.
Instead of blending together into one dark surface, the patio began showing clear differences from one paver to the next. Variations in texture and color became part of the design again.
Garden Path Changed From Almost Black to Multi-Toned Stone

The narrow flagstone pathway produced one of the strongest before-and-after comparisons.
Photos taken before cleaning show many stones appearing nearly black. After cleaning, the same path revealed a combination of gray, reddish, tan, and pink tones across the individual flagstones.
Surface Cleaner Covered Large Areas Quickly

One of the project photos shows a circular surface-cleaner attachment connected to the pressure washer.
The attachment allows large paved areas to be cleaned evenly while covering a wider section with each pass than a standard pressure-washing wand. It is commonly used on patios, sidewalks, and driveways where consistent results matter.
Some Lichen Stains Remained Visible

Several commenters noticed small dark spots that remained on portions of the stone after cleaning.
According to pressure-washing professionals in the discussion, lichen can be difficult to remove because it bonds tightly to masonry surfaces. Additional treatment is often required when those stains have been present for long periods.
Original Stone Colors Returned Across the Entire Landscape

The final photos show a noticeable difference between the cleaned paving and the surrounding gravel, lawn, and planting beds.
What appeared to be dark, weathered stone at the start of the project turned out to contain far more variation than the original photos suggested. The transformation highlights how much natural color can remain hidden beneath years of accumulated buildup.
