This 1959 Mint Green Bathroom Was Remodeled Without Losing Its Defining Color
Mint green covered the original 1959 bathroom across the floor, tiled vanity, sink, bathtub, toilet, walls, and built-in cabinets. Reddit user u/murican_ninja considered saving part of the old tile, but much of it was in bad condition and the bathroom had become “basically unusable.”
The remodel replaces the damaged surfaces and fixtures while carrying green into the new design. Deep green tile now surrounds the bathing area, joined by a wood double vanity, pale floor tile, clear glass, and brass fixtures.
Mint Green Extended Across the Sink Wall
Square mint tile covered the vanity counter and continued up the wall as a backsplash. The inset sink, cabinet fronts, and floor repeated the color, while a wide frameless mirror stretched across most of the vanity wall.
The original vanity also sat lower than the replacement. The homeowner confirmed its short height when discussing the differences between the 1959 bathroom and the remodel.
Matching Fixtures Continued Into the Bathing Area
The bathtub and toilet came in shades close to the surrounding tile, connecting the fixtures with the walls and floor. Square tile rose above the tub to the showerhead and continued beneath the window behind the toilet.
Chrome hardware appeared at the shower, tub controls, towel bar, and toilet-paper holder. A curtain provided the division between the tub and toilet.
Built-In Cabinets Filled the Wall Beside the Vanity
Tall cabinets occupied much of the wall opposite the sink, combining doors and drawers in the same pale green used across the room. Removing them opened a long section of wall that had been devoted to fixed storage.
The homeowner had considered preserving portions of the original bathroom, including usable tile. Much of the material was in poor condition, making that approach impractical for the renovation.
Window Stayed Above the Tub and Toilet
The window sat between the original tub and toilet, with tile wrapping beneath its sill. The remodel retained that opening instead of closing or relocating it.
Keeping the window meant the new enclosure had to work around an existing feature in the wet zone. Its frame now interrupts the new tiled wall in much the same position seen before the renovation.
New Layout Opens the View From the Door
Removing the tall storage bank changes the entrance view. A wood vanity runs along the left side, while the tub and shower occupy the back wall behind clear glass.
Large pale floor tiles with gray veining replace the small green squares. Tile was not continued across the dry walls because the homeowner said the project had reached the amount they wanted to spend.
Clear Glass Replaced the Shower Curtain
Glass panels now extend across the tub and along its side, held by brass hinges and long vertical handles. The transparent enclosure exposes the tiled walls, window, niche, and shower fixtures from outside the tub.
A narrow tiled ledge sits at the right end of the tub, creating a finished transition between the glass panel and wall.
Shower Wall Gained Several New Fixtures
The former showerhead and tub controls were replaced with an overhead shower, handheld shower on a vertical rail, separate controls, and a brass tub filler. A long recessed niche provides storage beside the fixtures.
The white tub adds another change beyond its color. According to the homeowner, it includes heated panels and air jets.
Vertical Tile Runs From Tub to Ceiling
Narrow rectangular tiles cover the shower walls from the tub edge to the ceiling, replacing the smaller square format used in 1959. White grout traces the vertical rows across the three sides of the enclosure.
The homeowner chose the darker shade after deciding against salvaging the old mint tile, describing the choice as a way to keep the bathroom’s “green spirit” alive.
Double Vanity Adds a Second Sink
The new wood vanity holds two undermount sinks beneath a pale stone top. Drawers occupy the center, with cabinet storage on each side and long brass pulls across the fronts.
Separate rounded rectangular mirrors replace the single wide sheet of glass. Brass faucets and horizontal wall lights repeat the metal used at the shower without bringing tile back onto the vanity wall.
Sink Side Changed From Matching Surfaces to Separate Materials
The side-by-side comparison shows the change from a tiled counter and matching basin to wood cabinetry, white sinks, and a pale stone surface. The floor also shifts from small squares to large slabs beneath the vanity.
Storage remains concentrated below the counter rather than climbing the adjacent wall, giving the two-sink vanity more width than the original fixture.
Tub Upgrade Kept the Bathroom’s 1959 Color Reference
The final comparison connects the old tub surround with the new enclosure. Both use green as the dominant wall color around the bath, while the remodel changes the tile shape, shade, fixtures, enclosure, and tub.
The original mint material could not be retained, but its color provided the reference for the replacement. Instead of reproducing a 1959 bathroom, the project carries one of its most visible features into a new set of materials.
