He Replaced the Sloped Lawn With Huge Boulders and Built a Fire Pit Below It
Patchy lawn once ran from the house toward a weathered timber fence, with a sloped section taking up much of the back of the yard. A narrow brick edge followed the change in grade, but the lower section had no defined use.
The homeowner, Reddit user u/Dazp84, replaced that slope with a row of huge dark boulders that holds back the higher ground. Pale gravel covers the bank above, while the space below became a level fire pit area with log seating and a wide steel bowl.
He also replaced the old timber boundary with dark metal fencing and added stone steps between the two elevations. Grass still covers much of the yard, but the former slope now separates the lawn from a dedicated space for fires and outdoor cooking.
Sloped Lawn Left Little Separation Between the Two Levels
Grass once ran across most of the yard, including the raised section near the rear fence. A line of red bricks traced the slope, but the two levels still read as one continuous lawn.
The trampoline occupied part of the upper section, while worn patches across the foreground left several areas of exposed soil. No patio or seating zone separated the lawn from the wooded boundary.
Weathered Timber Fence Closed Off the Back Corner
The old fence shows more wear from this angle. Uneven boards, exposed posts, braces, and a small timber gate enclosed the narrow section beside the building.
The grade also becomes clearer here. Ground rises toward the fence, leaving little level space between the boundary and the lower lawn.
Huge Boulders Now Hold Back the Upper Yard
Large dark boulders form a retaining wall across the former slope. Instead of a straight masonry wall, individual rocks stack at different heights and depths across the change in elevation.
Pale gravel covers the bank above the rocks and meets the new charcoal metal fence. Below, a compacted tan surface creates a level fire pit area bordered by grass.
Gravel Replaced Grass Along the Upper Bank
The second finished view shows how far the rock wall extends across the yard. Boulders separate the upper gravel bed from the lawn without hiding the change in grade.
Dark fencing follows the top edge and continues down toward the outbuilding. Its vertical panels create a much cleaner boundary than the timber boards seen in the original yard.
Stone Steps Connect the Fire Pit Area to the Gate
A short flight of dark stone steps cuts through the raised section beside the building. White gravel fills both sides, with large boulders marking the transition back to the lawn.
At the top, a gate is integrated into the metal fence. The stepped fence line follows the slope instead of leaving the changing ground level exposed beneath the panels.
Log Benches Surround a Wide Steel Fire Bowl
Four substantial log sections provide seating around a wide steel fire bowl. The logs sit on the tan surface rather than on grass, keeping the gathering area separate from the lawn.
The boulder wall forms the backdrop, so the retaining structure also defines one side of the new seating zone. There is no conventional patio furniture or built-in benchwork competing with the rocks.
Fire Bowl Sits at the Center of the Lower Level
Once lit, the scale of the steel bowl becomes clearer. Its broad, shallow shape holds the fire in the center of the seating arrangement, with the logs positioned several feet away.
The fire pit occupies ground that once belonged to the sloped lawn. Rather than adding a portable bowl to the existing grass, the project created a separate surface for it.
Steel BBQ Plate Turns the Fire Pit Into a Cooking Area
A round steel BBQ plate sits across the fire bowl, leaving a mesh cooking section through the center. Two large handles allow the plate to be lifted from the bowl when the fire pit returns to its open configuration.
That adds another use to the new gathering area without requiring a separate built-in grill. The same steel bowl used for the fire becomes the cooking point among the log seats.
Sloped Lawn Became Two Defined Backyard Levels
The original yard relied on grass to cover almost everything between the house and rear fence. The slope was present, but little in the layout made use of it.
Now the higher ground ends at a boulder retaining wall, while the space below has its own fire pit, log seating, and hard-packed surface. The lawn remains, but it no longer has to occupy every usable part of the backyard.
