He Rebuilt His Pantry With Custom Shelves and It Stopped Looking Like Storage

Want a pantry that stores more without feeling crowded? Narrow pantry rooms often end up relying on bulky shelving units that waste wall space, collect clutter, and leave groceries piled on the floor. Finding everyday ingredients becomes harder as more items compete for the same shelves.

This pantry renovation, shared on Imgur by drnoog9, started by removing a freestanding cabinet that occupied nearly one side of the room. Instead of replacing it with another piece of furniture, the pantry was rebuilt with custom wall-mounted shelving designed specifically for the available space. The finished layout provides more storage, keeps the floor clear, and makes every shelf easier to reach.

The original pantry relied on a tall freestanding shelving unit paired with a blue drawer cabinet below. Food overflowed onto the countertop surface, packages collected on the floor, and the narrow walkway became increasingly difficult to use. Although the room had good depth, much of the surrounding wall space remained unused because everything depended on one large piece of furniture.

Once the cabinet, drawers, and pantry supplies were removed, the room looked much larger than before. The rustic wall paneling and existing upper storage shelf remained in place, creating a clean space to measure and redesign. Starting with an empty room made it easier to plan shelving that would use every wall instead of only one side.

Wall Cleats Established the Shelf Layout

A laser level helped position the first wood cleats around the walls before anything else was installed. These horizontal supports determined the height of every shelf and wrapped around the corners so the future shelving could span multiple walls. Building the framework first ensured the finished shelves would align throughout the pantry.

Before building the entire system, one large plywood shelf was test-fitted onto the wall cleats. The shelf wrapped around the corner while a curved cutout preserved walking space through the middle of the pantry. This confirmed the dimensions before additional shelves were built.

More Supports Prepared the Remaining Walls

Additional wood cleats were installed higher and lower around the room to support every remaining shelf. The staggered arrangement created dedicated storage levels while leaving generous vertical clearance for larger pantry items. At this stage, the entire storage layout could already be visualized.

Steel Brackets Strengthened the Longer Shelves

Black steel shelf brackets were added beneath the left-side supports to reinforce the longer spans. Combined with the wall cleats, they provide additional strength for heavier items while keeping the shelving open underneath. The brackets also introduce subtle contrast against the light-colored walls.

Large plywood shelves were installed across the supports, creating a continuous wraparound storage system. Rounded front corners soften the appearance, while the curved cutouts maintain a comfortable path through the pantry. One deeper shelf was intentionally sized to accommodate the microwave.

White Paint Brightened the Entire Pantry

Several coats of white paint transformed the plywood into finished built-in shelving. Painter’s tape protected the floor during the finishing process, while the fresh color reflected far more light throughout the narrow pantry. The shelves immediately appeared cleaner and more permanent.

Trim Completed the Built-In Appearance

Front trim pieces were added to the shelves, giving each one a thicker profile and hiding the plywood edges. The microwave was also placed into its dedicated location, showing how the new layout would function once complete. At this stage, the pantry already looked like custom cabinetry rather than a DIY project.

After food was returned, the improvement became immediately obvious. Dry goods, jars, canned food, cereals, and snacks each received dedicated storage while the floor remained completely clear. Instead of digging through stacked containers, nearly every item is visible from the doorway, making the pantry feel larger despite occupying exactly the same footprint.

Would you replace one bulky cabinet with shelves that fit every wall
@drnoog9

Removing the bulky cabinet opened the sightline from the doorway, making the pantry feel noticeably wider before adding a single extra square foot. Would you replace one bulky cabinet with shelves that fit every wall?
