Wire word art has become a popular DIY trend in the past few years. It has been used to decorate home décor, make jewelry, and even used in lighting projects. Personally, I had always wanted to make some words out of wire but found the whole concept a bit difficult. However, after some researching and trial and error, I found that making wire words was not as bad as it seemed. So today I will be showing you how to create some wire word art which is inspired by Halloween!
Today’s project is a Halloween inspired wire word block art! In this project, we are making a word out of wire to be in the center of our wooden block. Making the word out of wire is probably the most challenging thing in this project, if you have never made a word out of wire before. If you are someone who is new to making words out of wire, then I suggest the following tips.
- Buy 20-24 Gauge Wire so your wire is bendable, but still, holds it shape.
- Write your word out on a piece of paper, to get an idea of how you want your word to look.
- Use piles and other tools to help create your word. For example, wrap your wire around a small marker to get the perfect shape of an ”O”.
- Jump in and start making your wire words no matter how bad they might look!
The last tip is really the key to making words out of wire. So don’t worry about your wire word looking right the first time, second time, or even the third time. Just keep practicing and experimenting, to find the right style and rhythm which works best for you!
- Wooden Block
- Scrapbooking Paper
- Xyron 3” Sticker Maker
- Paint (matching the color of your scrapbooking paper)
- 24 Gauge Gold Wire
- Foam Brush
- Industrial Strength Glue (not pictured)
Step 1: Paint your wooden block and set it aside to dry.
Step 2: Cut out your scrapbooking paper that is the same size as your wooden block.
Step 3: Grab your scrapbooking paper piece and slide it through your Xyron 3” Sticker Maker.
Step 4: Add your scrapbooking paper piece to the front of your wooden block. Before adding it through, make sure you rub your scrapbooking paper piece while it’s on the Xyron Sticker paper. That way, you’ll be creating a really strong adhesives backing.
When your scrapbooking paper piece is on your wooden block, trim around the edges with some scissors, to get a nice clean edge.
Step 5: Grab your gold wire and cut off a piece that is about 12 inches. Then by using your fingers and pliers, begin forming your word. Once you’re happy with the look, cut off any extra wire.
Step 6: Take your wire word and add a bit of glue to the back. Then adhere it to your wooden block and set it aside to dry.
Once your wire word is completely dry, you’re ready to display your wire word block art!
I love how these wire word blocks turned out! They would look so cute either on a bookshelf or on a coffee table.
Like I mentioned before, the key to making words out of wire is to simply jump in and start practicing. Once you get the hang of making the words, you can then spell out almost any word of your choosing. In this case, if you making this for Halloween, you may want to use words like boo, scary, spooky, Halloween, monster, or candy. Boo, (I feel) would be a great word to start out with since its short and pretty easy to make.
If you made this wire word block art, what word would you try to make?
