Garden Fence Panels Ended Up on the Living Room Ceiling Instead

Most people buy wood lattice panels for garden trellises, privacy screens, or fence projects. Interior designer @eanesinteriors had a different idea, covering an entire living room ceiling with the inexpensive outdoor material instead.

After trimming, painting, and installing the panels overhead, the plain ceiling became one of the room’s most noticeable design features, drawing thousands of reactions online.

Garden Fence Panels Became an Unexpected Ceiling Material

Instead of buying traditional ceiling materials, Shelby Eanes picked up pressure-treated wood lattice panels from the garden section. Normally used for fences, decks, and climbing plants, the panels became the foundation for a geometric ceiling treatment that completely changed the room.

Several lattice panels were arranged on the floor to determine the final layout before a single cut was made. Measuring each section first helped keep the diamond pattern aligned once the individual pieces were installed overhead.

Straight guides marked the cut lines before a table saw removed the excess material around the edges. Trimming each panel allowed the finished installation to fit tightly between the room’s walls and exposed ceiling beam.

Before installation, every panel received a dark brown finish that made the lattice resemble decorative millwork instead of pressure-treated fencing. The darker color also creates stronger contrast against the white ceiling above it.

Ceiling Installation Took Two People

Large lattice panels are lightweight but awkward to position overhead, so two people worked together to lift, align, and fasten each section. Once the first panel was secured, the remaining pieces continued the repeating grid across the ceiling.

The finished lattice creates depth and texture across the ceiling while allowing the original white surface to remain visible through every opening. What began as a material intended for outdoor fencing now functions as a decorative architectural feature inside the home.

Reactions Were Split on the Finished Look

The project quickly sparked debate online. Some viewers praised the creativity and custom appearance, while others compared it to the ceilings found in Italian-themed restaurants during the 1990s. Whether people loved it or not, the project proved that an inexpensive backyard material can completely change the look of a room.

Would you install garden lattice on a ceiling, or would you keep it outdoors where it was originally intended?
