Box Fans Specifications – A Beginner’s Guide

Among all the devices meant to increase your indoor comfort, box fans are some of the simplest. This type of fan usually comes in a large housing and can even be more effective than some oscillating fans. Box fans are a safe bet for both blowing air into and out of a room for cooling. Following a simple yet ergonomic design, the way a box fan looks like has been the same for decades. That is because it works great, so only few additions were worthy enough.

As most home appliances, fans are usually given a rating. That indicates how much air they can move in a given amount of time. You will encounter  the CFM (cubic feet per minute) as the most common spec. The proper fan for your space will be one in accordance with the volume of your room. You can calculate how many cubic feet are in your house using this formula: length x width x height.

Features to look for in a box fan:

  • Size – the diameter of the box fan blades will impact its performance. The larger the diameter, the bigger the area that the fan can cool efficiently. Also, the overall dimensions of the box fan should not give you a headache to find a suitable place for it.
  • CFM – helps determine how well your fan works at blowing air in a given space. The higher the CFM, the more powerful the box fan will be.
  • Speed options – most box fans feature two or three speed settings (high, medium, low). The more options of speed available, the more customizable the airflow function.
  • Noise level – known to be quite loud in the past, thanks to engineering, box fans are nowadays quieter. Check the packaging for the decibel rating (dB), to get an idea on how loud your box fan can be. The lower the dB rating, the quieter the model.
  • Cord length – unless you like having a lot of extensions around the house, you may prefer a box fan with a longer cord. This will help you place it in any place you want, without worrying that it won’t reach the socket.
  • Remote control – because they make everything more convenient. From adjusting the speed to turning the device on/off, a remote can give you the power to control the fan from across the room.
  • Front-facing controls – prove useful if you plan to place your fan in a window and not move it too often. Compared to top-controls, this option makes it easier to access the settings.
  • Removable grille – for an easier removal of the dust and dirt from the blades. It is far more comfortable to clean the blades when you don’t have a front grille stopping you.

How To Clean Your Box Fan?

As expected, the blades on the box fan tend to gather a layer of dust in time. So, add cleaning your fan in your calendar once in a while. This way, you prevent those nasty dust particles from spreading all over your home. And you also save the fan motor from getting clogged, overheat and stop working or even catch fire.

To clean your box fan, you need : a screwdriver, a vacuum cleaner, water and a damp cloth.

First step is to unplug the cord from the power source, for your own safety. Then, use the screwdriver to remove the grills from the back and front. On average, box fans have about 12 screws in place.

Next, place your grills in water to soak or use a high-pressure shower head to blast the dirt away. Remove any pet hair residues and leave to dry.

Use the vacuum or the damp cloth for the electrical part of your box fan. Take away the dust with the cloth or use the vacuum for tight ends around the motor. Avoid the copper wiring area to prevent any damage. Clean the blades with the damp cloth (it should not be wet) and allow them to dry.

After all the components are dry, reassemble them and enjoy the improved air flow.
