Before Cement Board, This Hidden Layer Goes Up First
Most homeowners picture a shower wall as tile attached to cement board. Homeowner Brittney Smart’s bathroom remodel reveals that another step comes first. Before a single cement board panel covers the framing, the insulated walls receive a continuous sheet of thick plastic that becomes part of the wall assembly but disappears once the shower is finished.
This moisture barrier never appears in the completed bathroom, yet it plays an important role. Installed behind the cement board, it helps direct any moisture that reaches the back of the wall downward toward the tub instead of allowing it to move into the insulation and framing. By the time the tile goes up, this entire layer is hidden behind everything else.
The Shower Wall Starts With Bare Studs
The first stage reveals everything the finished shower normally hides. Wall studs, insulation, plumbing, and window framing remain exposed while the old surround has already been removed. At this point, there is nothing separating the insulation from future moisture.
Rather than covering the framing right away, the wall receives another layer before cement board enters the room.
Thick Plastic Covers the Insulation First
Instead of fastening cement board directly against the insulated wall, a sheet of 6-mil polyethylene goes up first. The material stretches across the studs, creating a continuous barrier between the insulation and the back of the future shower wall.
Because this layer sits behind everything else, it remains one of the easiest steps to miss once the renovation reaches the tiling stage.
The Plastic Gets Measured Before It Gets Cut
The wall dimensions determine the size of each plastic sheet before installation begins. Large sections reduce the number of seams across the wall, leaving fewer interruptions in the barrier.
Planning the sheet size first also makes it easier to wrap corners and continue the barrier across adjoining walls.
Extra Length Serves a Purpose
The plastic extends beyond the measured wall height instead of stopping at the bottom plate. That extra material is not waste. It becomes part of the waterproof path once the barrier reaches the bathtub.
Leaving additional length now avoids short sections later that could leave gaps near the tub.
Staples Hold One Continuous Sheet
Installation begins from the top corner before moving across the wall. Each staple secures the barrier against the framing while keeping the plastic flat enough for the cement board that follows.
Rather than covering the wall with several small pieces, one larger sheet maintains a continuous layer across most of the surface.
Flat Plastic Keeps the Next Layer Straight
Once both top corners are secured, the remaining plastic is pulled across the insulation before additional staples finish the installation. The goal is not a perfectly stretched sheet but a smooth surface without large folds behind the cement board.
A flatter barrier helps the rigid panels sit against the framing without unnecessary bumps.
The Barrier Continues Behind the Tub
One of the most important details happens where the wall meets the bathtub. Instead of ending above the tub, the plastic slips behind the tub flange so any moisture running down the barrier returns to the tub instead of the framing below.
That connection disappears after the cement board goes up, but it continues directing water long after the bathroom is complete.
Corners Stay Covered Instead of Exposed
The barrier continues around inside corners without leaving the framing exposed. Small overlaps allow one sheet to extend past the next, maintaining coverage where two walls meet.
Those hidden corners become some of the most important parts of the installation because they disappear once tile covers the walls.
Window Openings Need Their Own Moisture Path
A shower window creates extra edges that require the same protection as the rest of the wall. Instead of stopping at the opening, the plastic wraps toward the window framing before the cement board covers the area.
Each corner receives careful cuts that allow the barrier to fold instead of bunching together.
The Plastic Wraps Into the Window Frame
The excess material folds around the framing rather than ending at the edge of the opening. This creates one continuous barrier instead of several separate pieces meeting around the window.
Once the trim and tile are installed, this entire layer disappears from view.
Small Gaps Hide the Final Edge
The last section of plastic slides into the narrow space beside the window frame using a flat tool. This keeps the edge tucked away instead of leaving exposed plastic around the finished tile.
It is a small detail, but one that completes the hidden moisture barrier before the next layer begins.
Cement Board Covers Everything
With the barrier complete, cement board becomes the first visible layer of the new shower wall. Once the panels are fastened to the studs, the plastic disappears behind them for good.
From this point forward, every waterproofing step builds on work that will never be seen again once the shower is tiled.
Stud Marks Stay Visible After the Walls Disappear
As the cement board covers the framing, the stud locations become much harder to find. Reference marks help keep every screw anchored into solid wood instead of missing the framing behind the panels.
Those simple marks save time while keeping the wall securely fastened.
One Pencil Line Replaces Guesswork
Before the framing disappears completely, the stud locations are marked where they will remain visible during installation. Those marks guide the remaining cement board screws without searching behind the finished surface.
Once the tile covers the wall, none of these hidden layers can be seen again. Yet the plastic barrier installed before the cement board remains one of the most important parts of the entire shower assembly, protecting the wall from behind while the finished tile takes all the attention.
