This Single-Car Garage Made Room for a Full Workshop Without Getting Bigger
Most single-car garages become catch-all storage, leaving little room for projects. Reddit user u/rscarson took a different approach, rebuilding the space around one continuous workbench, wall storage, and brighter finishes that transformed the garage into a dedicated workshop without adding a single square foot.

Insulation, drywall, custom workbenches, pegboard, lumber racks, overhead storage, and a dedicated 20-amp circuit replaced exposed studs and scattered tools. The result keeps the floor open while almost everything else moves onto the walls.
Empty Walls Became the Starting Point

The garage started with exposed framing on one side, unfinished drywall on the other, and a single work table surrounded by tools. Most of the floor served as temporary storage, leaving little room for larger projects.
An overhead shelf already held seasonal storage, but the walls contributed very little to organizing the space.
One Wall Was Cleared Before Construction

Before new materials went up, the homeowner cleared equipment away from the wall and opened enough space to begin the renovation. The existing single outlet also highlighted the need for additional electrical capacity.
According to the homeowner, a new dedicated 20-amp circuit would become one of the first upgrades so power tools would have their own supply.
Insulation Covered Every Wall

Rockwool insulation filled each stud bay before a vapor barrier sealed the walls. The homeowner explained that the insulation addressed moisture concerns while also improving sound control, and noted that vapor barriers are required where he lives in Canada.
Running electrical and network cables before closing the walls also prepared the workshop for future projects.
Drywall Brightened the Entire Garage

Fresh drywall replaced exposed framing and dark wall surfaces across the garage. The brighter walls reflected much more light while creating a clean background for future storage.
Family members helped hang the drywall before the homeowner completed the remaining work.
Long Workbench Framing Took Shape

The workbench started as a heavy frame built from dimensional lumber anchored to the wall. Multiple vertical supports carried the load instead of relying on cabinets beneath the countertop.
Leaving the lower section open also created space for larger tools and equipment.
Plywood Created One Continuous Work Surface

Large plywood panels covered the frame to create one uninterrupted workbench that stretched across most of the wall. A corner section expanded the usable surface without blocking movement through the garage.
The design reserved one opening beneath the bench for the air compressor while keeping frequently used tools within easy reach.
Bench Details Added Everyday Function

A bench vise attached to one end of the countertop created a permanent clamping station for metal and woodworking projects. Reinforced framing beneath the plywood provides the support needed for heavier tasks.
The open layout also allows rolling equipment to slide beneath the work surface when not in use.
Pegboard Filled the Space Beneath the Upper Shelf

The open wall above the workbench became a dedicated tool station once a full pegboard panel was installed beneath the upper shelf. Hand tools moved out of drawers and onto the wall, while the shelf above created space for supplies and larger equipment without reducing the work surface.
This combination keeps the bench clear for active projects while placing the tools used most often within easy reach.
Finished Workshop Kept the Floor Open

With the major work complete, the garage functions very differently from the original space. The center remains open for building projects while the workbench, pegboard, overhead shelf, and wall storage handle most of the organization.
The homeowner chose to leave the concrete floor unfinished after deciding it would collect wear over time anyway, despite several Reddit users recommending epoxy.
Wall Storage Replaced Floor Storage

Ladders now hang flat against the wall instead of occupying floor space. Extension cords, clamps, and cutting tools each have dedicated locations that remain easy to access.
This change alone opens enough room for larger materials and safer movement through the garage.
Lumber Racks Used Empty Wall Space

Long boards moved onto horizontal wall racks instead of leaning in corners. Storing lumber this way keeps different lengths visible while preventing stacks from spreading across the floor.
The tire rack above uses another area that would otherwise remain empty.
Garage Transformation Shows Every Change

The before-and-after comparison shows how much changed without expanding the garage. Exposed studs, unfinished walls, and crowded floor space gave way to dedicated work areas, organized storage, and open space for building projects.
Reddit users pointed to the efficient use of wall space as the biggest takeaway, with several saying the renovation proved a single-car garage could become a capable workshop through planning rather than additional square footage.
