This Backyard Started Replacing Empty Lawn With Places to Play
A dry lawn, scattered play equipment, and worn fencing left most of this backyard without purpose. The space had room for entertaining, sports, and landscaping, but almost every activity competed for the same open area.
Reddit user u/DeepDriveHR rebuilt the yard into a multi-purpose outdoor space with a basketball court, pergola, artificial turf, raised planting beds, and new fencing. Instead of choosing between recreation and outdoor living, the redesign organized the property into dedicated zones that work together throughout the year.
The Backyard Had Plenty of Space but No Destination
The original yard stretched behind the house with enough room for multiple activities, but almost everything happened on dry grass. A wooden playset, small basketball hoop, and scattered furniture occupied random locations without defining how the space should function.
Large portions of the property remained bare soil and dead lawn. The fence leaned in several sections, while the uneven ground made the yard feel unfinished despite its size.
The Project Started With a Blank Canvas
Before construction began, the homeowners removed loose furniture, bricks, and temporary landscaping. The images show how little permanent infrastructure existed beyond the playset and perimeter fence.
This phase also highlights the amount of grading required before hardscaping. According to the homeowner, significant soil removal flattened the yard before paving, retaining walls, drainage, irrigation, lighting, and landscaping were installed.
Raised Planting Beds Started Defining the Perimeter
Instead of placing flower beds directly against the fence, low retaining walls create continuous raised planters around the property. The elevated borders frame the lawn while separating planting areas from the play surface.
Young ornamental trees, shrubs, grasses, and dark foliage plants introduce height without blocking the surrounding views. White decorative stone around selected plants creates another layer of contrast against the gray wall blocks and green turf.
Artificial Turf Reserved One Corner for Play
Rather than covering the entire backyard with synthetic grass, the design limits turf to one rectangular section. This creates a dedicated play lawn while allowing the remaining surface to serve different purposes.
The raised wall also doubles as casual seating during gatherings, giving spectators a place to watch children play without bringing additional furniture onto the lawn.
The Backyard Started Working Like an Outdoor Living Room
Instead of building a patio beside the lawn, the homeowners dedicated almost half of the backyard to one continuous paved gathering space. A white pergola shelters a full dining table while a separate lounge occupies the opposite side, creating two outdoor rooms without adding walls.
The basketball court shares the same surface instead of occupying its own corner. Meals, conversation, and games now happen on one level platform, allowing the space to shift from family dinners to recreation without moving furniture or changing layouts.
One Backyard Replaced Four Separate Projects
The before-and-after comparison shows more than new landscaping. Dry grass, temporary play equipment, and worn fencing gave way to a backyard where every area has a defined purpose. Raised planting beds frame the perimeter, artificial turf creates a dedicated play lawn, pavers support sports and entertaining, and the pergola extends the living space beyond the house.
Rather than adding features one at a time, the redesign connects recreation, dining, landscaping, and circulation into a single plan. Each improvement supports the next, making the entire backyard function as one complete outdoor space instead of several unrelated additions.
