They Removed the Wall Between the Kitchen and Dining Room to Make Space for a 5-Seat Island
The kitchen had plenty of cabinets and counter space, but walls kept it separated from the rooms around it. A doorway and two pass-through openings connected the kitchen to the adjoining space without creating one continuous room.
Reddit user u/BabeVigodas took the kitchen down to the structure and removed the load-bearing wall, which required a steel beam. The three-month remodel also brought new flooring, cabinets, quartz countertops, appliances, and a custom hexagon backsplash.
Beige Tile and Granite Defined the Original Kitchen
Granite counters wrapped around the kitchen, with a peninsula separating the work area from an open section near the exterior doors. Beige floor tile continued through both zones while pale blue walls and white cabinets kept the palette light.
The peninsula held the sink and dishwasher, leaving the open floor beyond it without a clear connection to the kitchen work zone.
Peninsula Cut Across the Existing Floor Plan
From the opposite side, the peninsula shows how much of the room it claimed. The sink faced the open area while the dishwasher sat beneath the counter at the end.
Blue tape on the floor marked parts of the planned layout. The existing range, microwave, refrigerator, and upper cabinets remained grouped around the perimeter.
Wall Kept the Kitchen Separate From the Next Room
A full-height wall stood between the kitchen and the adjoining room, broken up by a doorway and two rectangular openings. The openings provided sightlines into the kitchen without joining the floor areas.
Removing this wall became the structural part of the remodel. Because it was load-bearing, a steel beam was installed as part of the project.
Existing Peninsula Faced the Dividing Wall
Looking back from the dining side shows the peninsula stretching across much of the opening into the kitchen. The counter provided seating or serving space, but its position reinforced the boundary between the two areas.
Once the wall and peninsula were removed, this section of floor could become part of a larger kitchen rather than space wrapped around two separate barriers.
Custom Hex Tile Became the New Range Backsplash
The new range wall pairs white cabinets with a stainless steel hood and an orange range. Hexagonal tiles in orange, pink, yellow, aqua, navy, and white climb behind the range and hood.
The tile came from Modwalls as a custom order. The homeowner said finding the size, shape, and colors took time, and the order had a nine-week lead time.
Five Stools Fit Along the New Island
With the dividing wall gone, a large island now sits between the kitchen and dining area. Five metal stools line its long side, while the white quartz top provides one continuous surface for seating and prep.
The island base uses Sherwin-Williams Maxi Teal rather than repeating the white perimeter cabinets. The cabinets were manufactured by Kith.
Cabinetry Now Runs Around the Range and Refrigerator
Tall white cabinets extend the storage toward the range, while drawers replace some of the smaller door cabinets found in the old layout. Open wood shelves fill the corner beside the refrigerator.
White quartz counters connect the new cabinet runs with the island. The homeowner confirmed quartz was used for the countertops.
Hardwood Replaced the Kitchen’s Beige Floor Tile
The former transition between tile and hardwood is gone. Wood flooring now runs from the adjoining room through the kitchen and dining area without a material break.
The broader renovation included about 1,500 square feet of new hardwood, along with work beyond the kitchen.
Dining Table Moved Into the Open Kitchen Layout
The dining table now sits beside the island instead of across a dividing wall. Exterior doors and windows remain in the same part of the room, but the surrounding floor plan has changed.
Curtains, plants, a yellow cabinet, and the dining furniture add more color beyond the teal island and backsplash without changing the kitchen’s white cabinet base.
Wall Removal Connected Both Sides of the Room
White still covers most of the perimeter cabinetry, but it no longer controls the room. Maxi Teal wraps the island, orange appears on the range and stools, yellow returns on the seating and storage cabinet, and the backsplash pulls several of those colors onto the range wall.
That choice was intentional. The homeowner said finding products outside the white-and-gray kitchen palette proved difficult, which led to a custom tile order and finishes chosen for color rather than resale-safe neutrals. The result keeps the white cabinets while taking the rest of the kitchen in another direction.
