The Backyard Had Little More Than Grass and a Small Patio Until This Deck Took Over the Space
Grass covered most of this backyard, while a small square of concrete pavers near the house provided the only hard surface for outdoor furniture. A sliding door opened onto two temporary wood steps, leaving the rest of the yard without a defined place for dining or seating.
Reddit user u/tuuluuwag replaced that setup with a large composite deck built across much of the back of the house. The project expanded beyond a single platform, with separate areas planned for a dining table, conversation furniture, a natural-gas fire table, pergola, and hot tub.
Trex Select decking in Pebble Grey and Winchester Grey covers the finished structure, with the darker boards framing sections of the lighter deck surface. Black railings, frosted glass around the hot tub, charcoal-stained pergola posts, and outdoor furniture continue the gray palette across the finished space.
Grass and Pavers Occupied Most of the Backyard
The original yard had lawn running from the house to the fence, interrupted by a small paver patio near one corner. Two wood steps below the sliding door handled the change in height between the interior and yard, while a children’s pool and slide occupied separate patches of grass.
No permanent patio connected the door, pavers, or remaining yard into one outdoor area. The eventual deck would extend across most of this open ground rather than remain confined to the existing paved footprint.
Existing Patio Came Out Before the Deck Went In
Grass and pavers were removed across the planned deck footprint, exposing compacted soil and gravel beside the house. Metal post bases mark the future support locations, showing how far the new structure would extend toward the fence.
The deck was planned at a scale that changed how the entire rear yard would function, rather than replacing the existing pavers with another patio of similar size.
Framing Established Separate Sections Across the Yard
Pressure-treated lumber created a broad frame extending from the sliding door toward the side and rear boundaries. Beams and closely spaced joists divide the footprint into several connected sections instead of one uninterrupted rectangle.
Extra bracing made parts of the frame appear almost double-layered. The homeowner later explained that some of this was intentional overbuilding, using leftover lumber to box the structure together beyond what was required.
Concrete Pad Was Built Into the Deck Plan
A separate framed rectangle in front of the deck was excavated, filled with base material, and prepared for concrete. This pad was designed to support the hot tub rather than placing its full weight on the composite deck framing.
The homeowner kept the hot-tub section separate from the main deck structure, a decision intended to account for movement between the concrete slab and deck footings.
Concrete and Stairs Changed How the Deck Met the Lawn
Once poured, the concrete pad established a solid base beside the deck while wood stair stringers created a broad route from deck level to the remaining lawn. The stairs sit between the main deck and concrete area rather than being pushed to an outside corner.
Framing also extends around the pad, preparing the hot tub to sit within the finished deck instead of appearing as equipment added after construction.
Two Composite Colors Broke Up the Large Surface
Trex Select boards begin covering the frame in two shades of gray. Pebble Grey fills the larger fields, while darker Winchester Grey boards create borders around the perimeter and between deck sections.
The darker picture-frame treatment becomes important across such a broad footprint because it marks changes in direction and separates connected areas without adding walls or physical dividers. Most boards were installed with hidden fasteners, while Cortex screws were used where grooved edges were unavailable.
Hot Tub Received Its Own Raised Deck Section
The hot tub sits inside a raised portion of the deck with composite boards running around its perimeter. Frosted glass panels mounted in black railing frames surround two sides, blocking direct views from neighboring properties without enclosing the tub beneath a solid wall.
Access was considered during construction rather than sacrificed for the built-in appearance. A section of dark Trex in front of the tub lifts out to expose the pumps, heater, and other service components, while another hatch provides access near the electrical connection.
Pergola Defined the Dining End of the Deck
A charcoal-colored pergola establishes a dining area at the far end of the finished deck, while conversation furniture occupies the open section closer to the house. The structure uses 6-by-6 posts with TojaGrid corner hardware and a fitted shade sail overhead.
Placing the dining table beneath the pergola creates a visual boundary without dividing the deck with another level or railing. Sofas and armchairs face inward across the adjacent section, leaving a clear route between the sliding door, seating area, and dining table.
String Lights Made the Pergola Work After Sunset
Rows of globe lights run beneath the pergola shade sail and extend around the dining table, turning the structure into the main source of overhead light after sunset. The homeowner identified them as patio vintage LED lights and also used the same lighting around the fence perimeter.
The dining furniture remains contained beneath the pergola while the conversation furniture stays outside its posts, preserving the separation between eating and seating areas after dark.
Fire Table Anchored the Open Seating Area
A rectangular fire table occupies the center of the conversation area, surrounded by sofas and armchairs rather than being positioned at the edge of the deck. The homeowner had a natural-gas line routed to this section before the Hampton fire table was installed.
Black metal railings replace the original wood fence as the immediate boundary around the elevated deck, while planters beside the brick wall soften the long run between the house and seating. Beyond the railing, the remaining yard still has room for an above-ground pool, keeping some lawn separate from the new hardscape.
Finished Deck Functions as Several Outdoor Rooms
The completed backyard uses one connected deck to support several distinct activities. Dining sits beneath the pergola, conversation furniture surrounds the fire table, the hot tub occupies its own screened section, and open circulation connects each zone back to the house.
What had been grass, a small paver square, and two steps outside the sliding door became a broad outdoor floor plan built around how the backyard would be used. The scale changed, but dividing the deck through furniture placement, picture-frame decking, railings, and the pergola kept the finished surface from reading as one oversized platform.
