She Turned Two Old Window Shutters Into a Wall Shelf
Two small wood window shutters and a narrow pallet board became a wall shelf in this project from Homedit.com contributor Morena Hockley. Instead of taking the shutters apart, she kept the frames and louvers intact and used them as the back of the shelf.
A pair of metal corner braces supports the board across the lower part of the shutters. Turquoise paint covers the brown wood and hardware, while D-rings on the back allow the finished piece to hang on the wall.
Two Wood Shutters Form the Back
The project starts with two small wood shutters joined at the center. A narrow pallet board sits across both shutters near the bottom, setting the position of the shelf before the support hardware goes on.
The existing louvers stay in place, so no part of the shutter panels needs to be removed to make room for the shelf.
Corner Braces Support the Board
Hockley marked the screw holes for the metal corner braces and drilled pilot holes into the wood. Each brace connects the horizontal shelf board to the face of a shutter.
Two Brackets Hold the Shelf Across Both Shutters
One bracket sits beneath each side of the board, giving the shelf support across both shutter panels. The brackets remain below the board rather than taking up space on its top surface.
Turquoise Paint Covers the Brown Wood
The original shutters have a brown wood finish, while the added shelf board starts as bare wood. Hockley covered both with turquoise Coastal Texture paint from Plaid Crafts, adding a second coat after the first dried.
The paint also covers the visible support hardware, tying the shutters, board, and brackets together under one finish.
D-Rings Provide a Way to Hang It
D-rings attach to the back of the shutter frame with screws. They provide mounting points while keeping the hanging hardware behind the finished piece.
Two Old Shutters Now Hold Décor on the Wall
Once mounted, the shutters serve as a turquoise backdrop while the added board holds small objects. The shelf projects from the bottom portion of the shutters without covering most of the original louvers.
One Board Changed What the Shutters Could Do
The finished shelf holds a blue glass diffuser and ceramic seahorse, with both shutters still visible behind them. One narrow board and two brackets changed the pair from unused window pieces into wall-mounted display storage.
