Her Oven Window Hadn’t Been Cleaned in a Decade. This Took Off the Buildup in 20 Minutes
Oven door glass can reach a point where grease and baked-on food form a brown film that no longer comes off with a quick wipe. Each use adds another layer, and once the glass turns cloudy, even seeing food through the oven door becomes difficult.
A baking soda paste can tackle that buildup without starting with oven cleaner. Reddit user u/Corgilicious tried the method on an oven window that had gone about a decade without a deep clean, mixing three parts baking soda with one part water and leaving it on the glass for 20 minutes before scrubbing. Years of Grease Can Hide the Oven Window
Grease, food splatter, and burnt residue cover the bottom of this oven and continue across the door glass. The window has taken on a cloudy yellow-brown cast that blocks the view through the door.
This is the type of buildup u/Corgilicious described after leaving the oven window untouched for about ten years. The Reddit user said the glass had stayed that way for so long that the clear result came as a surprise.
Baking Soda and Water Form a Paste for the Buildup
Baking soda is mixed with water until it becomes thick enough to spread rather than run off the oven surfaces. The Homedit method shown here uses the paste across the oven floor, walls, and door, covering the greasy areas before they are scrubbed.
For the oven window, u/Corgilicious used a specific ratio of three parts baking soda to one part water. A small batch could mean three tablespoons of baking soda mixed with one tablespoon of water. The paste then sat on the glass for 20 minutes.
The Paste Gets Time to Sit Before Scrubbing
The second cleaning sequence shows why the paste needs contact time. After coating the glass and surrounding surfaces, the residue begins to lift as the area is wiped. Vinegar is sprayed during the Homedit cleanup process to help remove the remaining baking soda paste.
The Reddit method was even shorter for the window. After the 20-minute wait, u/Corgilicious scrubbed the glass and reported that the baked-on layer came off with little trouble. For anyone concerned about using a metal scrubber on glass, the Reddit user suggested using a Scotch-Brite-type scrubber instead.
20 Minutes Leaves the Oven Window Clear Again
With the paste and residue removed, the yellow-brown film that covered the door glass is gone. The oven floor and walls have also lost the crumbs, grease, and baked-on patches visible at the start.
After about a decade without a deep clean, u/Corgilicious’s oven window went from coated in brown buildup to clear glass in 20 minutes. The change is strong enough that the oven interior can be seen through the door again.
