This Scrap Pallet Was Turned Into a Wall Wine Rack That Stores Bottles and Glasses
Wood pallets often end up stacked in garages or thrown away after deliveries. Most people see them as scrap wood, but with a few cuts they can become something useful for the home.
One simple example is a wall-mounted wine rack made from a single pallet. The project requires basic tools and a small section of the pallet, yet it creates a piece that can store wine bottles and hang glasses in a compact wall unit.
The idea is simple: instead of breaking the pallet apart completely, part of its structure becomes the frame of the rack.
How the Pallet Wine Rack Works
The rack uses the lower section of a pallet as the main body. The pallet boards create a natural frame where bottles can sit while an added board underneath holds wine glasses.
The design includes three main parts:
- Bottle shelf where the wine bottles rest
- Stemware holder with slots that allow wine glasses to slide in
- Wall-mounted frame that supports the weight of bottles and glasses
Because pallets are already built from strong deck boards and blocks, much of the structure already exists before the project even begins.
The Simple Build Process
The project only requires a small portion of a pallet and basic cutting tools.
- Cut the pallet section – A section of the pallet is cut to the desired size. In this project, half of the pallet was used, creating space for about three wine bottles and four glasses.
- Reinforce the frame – Pallet wood can be rough or loose, so extra nails were added to strengthen the frame after cutting.
- Add the bottle shelf – A leftover pallet board is attached along the bottom to create a ledge where bottles sit.
- Build the glass holder – Another board is attached underneath the shelf. Slots are cut into the board so the stems of wine glasses slide into place.
- Drill locking holes – Small round holes at the end of each slot allow the glass base to rest securely once inserted.
- Sand and stain the wood – Because pallet wood is rough, sanding prepares the surface for stain. A dark stain gives the rack a rustic finish.
- Seal the surface – A coat of polyurethane protects the stain and prevents color transfer onto walls or glasses.

Mounting the Rack on the Wall
Because wine bottles and glasses add weight, the rack must be mounted securely.
- Screwing directly into a wall stud
- Using heavy-duty wall anchors
- Using long screws through the pallet frame
Why Pallet Projects Work So Well
Pallet wood is popular for DIY projects because it is:
- Free or inexpensive
- Strong and durable
- Already assembled into useful structures
With a few cuts, a pallet can become shelving, furniture, or storage pieces without needing large amounts of lumber.
Projects like this wine rack show how scrap materials can become functional decor with only basic tools and some creativity.
