Summer-Ready Lawn and Garden Checklist

The key to a healthy yard in summer is early preparation. Start essential yard work in fall and spring, when cooler temperatures and ample water support growth. With the right steps, your lawn and garden will thrive through the hottest months.

Aerate

Remove small plugs of soil to improve oxygen, nutrient, and water absorption. Aerate every 1-3 years in fall or spring, depending on traffic and soil type.

Dethatch

Remove excess thatch (more than ½”) in fall to improve soil access. Use a dethatching rake or power rake, or hire a lawn service. Dethatch before aerating and fertilizing.

Fertilize

Fertilize after dethatching and aerating in fall, and again in spring. Use the correct mix for your grass type and follow package instructions. Avoid summer fertilizing.

Water – Especially Flower Beds

Lawns need 1 inch of water weekly. Water early morning for absorption. Use automatic systems or water deeply 2-3 times a week to promote deep roots. In water restrictions, prioritize flower beds.

Add Mulch To Flower Beds

Mulch retains moisture and adds nutrients. Use store-bought mulch or create your own from yard waste.

Mowing Properly

Cut no more than ⅓ of grass height, leaving it 2-3 inches. Use sharp blades and a mulching mower to recycle clippings.

Reseed Dead Spots

Reseed dead areas in spring with the same seed type. Water and fertilize consistently.

Build Footpaths Or Sidewalks

Install paths in high-traffic areas to prevent soil compaction and broken grass.

Edging and Trimming

Edge garden beds, paths, and driveways for a neat look. Prune trees and shrubs in fall or winter when dormant.

Pests

Inspect for pests early. Use eco-friendly treatments like diatomaceous earth or borax for small infestations.
