A Closer Look

Today’s comparison does seem a little bit unfair because we’re putting side by side two beds that have almost nothing in common. We’re putting the Zenhaven against the Nolah Original 10 mattress, a bed that’s made entirely out of foam and it’s designed for people who are on a budget.

The second mattress of the day is the Zenhaven, a bed made and delivered to you by the awesome people over at Saatva, a company that you’ve surely heard of in your endeavors of finding a good mattress. Designed to be an eco-friendly bed that offers two different firmness options in just one mattress, the Zenhaven bed is made from a combination of natural latex, wool, organic cotton, all of which blend perfectly to create a mattress that’s designed to conform and support different kinds of sleepers.

Construction

The construction of the Nolah Original 10 mattress is pretty straightforward, as it is with most all-foam mattresses that are within the same price range. The cover is made with a mixture of viscose and all-natural polyester, and it bears the company’s logo on the side. The first layer that we encounter inside the Nolah Original 10 is made with the company’s proprietary AirFoam. It offers plenty of contouring and has a slow response to pressure. It makes it pretty easy for combination sleepers to switch between positions with great ease.

The transition layer of this bed is made with a firmer type of polyfoam, one that’s meant to make sure your body doesn’t sink into the surface of the bed too deep. Its quick response to pressure gives the bed a nice bouncy feel. The core of the mattress is a generous layer made from HD polyfoam, which gives the bed support and stability.

Shipping

You can order the Nolah mattress from anywhere in the continental US. this bed in a box will be shipped to your doorstep, but without the perks of a white glove delivery service. That means that nobody will install the mattress for you, so you’ll have to handle that yourself. All of Nolah’s mattresses are shipped with a tracking number attached to them, which means that you can always inquire about the current status of your order.

Where It’s Made

Nolah is a company that stays true to the American tradition of making beds and their components exclusively on American soil.

Special Features

The Nolah mattress is a budget type of foam bed that’s designed to offer a balance between price and the comfort that you get. It stands out thanks to the proprietary AirFoam that’s used in the comfort layer of the bed. In spite of not having gel or graphite infusions or convoluted shape, this layer actually does a really decent job of keeping you cool by promoting temperature neutrality.

Firmness Level

Always look at firmness levels with a bit of a skeptical eye, as people can react differently to exactly the same bed since there are so many factors at stake here. The firmness of the mattress is what determines how hard or soft the surface of the bed it, but things like your body weight or favorite sleeping position will also be decisive in this aspect.

Testing has revealed that the Nolah Original 10 is a bed with a firmness rating of 5 out of 10, which makes it a medium-soft mattress. Consequently, the softness of the upper layer makes it better for side sleepers who need the additional conforming and pressure point relief as they are resting in this position.

But even if the bed might seem like it’s designed with side sleepers in mind, you will also discover that it offers plenty of support for back sleepers as well, making sure the spine is aligned. And, since the AirFoam in the comfort layer has such a good response to pressure, it’s safe to say that combination sleepers would also benefit from sleeping on this bed.

Sleep Trial

When you buy the Nolah mattress, you get 120 nights at your disposal and test to see how the mattress feels. Nolah does require that you give the mattress at least 30 nights of sleep trial before attempting to initiate a return. This break-in period is quite common among mattress companies, as it is very difficult to judge a mattress that you’ve only slept on for one night. People that do eventually decide to return their Nolah mattress may expect to receive a full refund, while the company will make sure the old mattress is picked up and donated to charity.

Warranty

You will get 15 years of warranty with every Nolah mattress that you buy, which is pretty decent if we compare it to other low-cost brands that only offer 10 years of warranty. The company is very transparent about the conditions that you need to fulfill in order to benefit from the warranty in case you should need it. First, and most importantly, make sure that you use the bed with a proper foundation. Failing to do so may void the warranty.

For the most part, mattresses are available in the six standard sizes that you’re already familiar with by now. However, the Zenhaven is more generous in terms of the sizes is offers. You can buy your own Zenhaven mattress in a Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, and Split King size.

Construction

Everything about the Zenhaven mattress looks and feels luxurious. The woven cover is made with organic cotton and quilted with organic New Zeeland wool. These two put together not only result in a soft feel, but they also add up to a cover that’s naturally breathable and moisture-wicking.

Since the Zenhaven is a flippable mattress, you’d assume that it comes with a mirrored construction. However, each of the two sides has its own firmness rating, which is basically like having two mattresses in a single product. The plush side of the bed has a comfort layer that’s made from Talalay latex. This layer measures 1.5 inches in thickness and it’s very soft and bouncy when you lie on top of it.

The core of the bed lies in a support layer that’s made from two different types of Talalay latex. When the plush side is facing up, the first layer right after the comfort one is three inches of medium-to-firm latex, while the layer beneath it is made with a firmer type of latex. As you move to the bottom side of the mattress, you get a supportive layer that’s made from firmer Talalay latex. If the mattress was flipped to this side, the entire feel of the bed would be firmer.

Shipping

Since you can only buy the Zenhaven mattress from the company’s official website, your only option is to have this bed delivered to your home. You can only order the bed from the continental US and certain parts of Canada. Because the company offers white-glove services with all orders, a team of two people will have the bed delivered to your location. With no additional charge, you can also opt for the company to have your old mattress removed and properly disposed of.

It’s also important to note that the Zenhaven mattress is not compressed for shipping, which could make the delivery process a bit more complicated since you have to schedule a four-hour delivery window and be home when the mattress arrives.

Where It’s Made

All of Zenhaven’s mattresses are made in Canada and the US.

There are many things that stand out once you get a good look and feel of the Zenhaven mattress. First of all, there’s the fact that this bed comes in two different firmness versions for each side of the bed, which technically means that you don’t have to choose a firm or a softer bed the second you’ve made the purchase. Also, if you’re ever in need of changing the firmness of the mattress, you can simply do so by flipping it to the other side.

Because it’s made from latex, one of the greatest things about the Zenhaven mattress is its durability. The bed also scores really well in chapters like motion isolation (in spite of the fact that it’s made with latex, which is bouncier compared to foam), pressure point relief, and noise level output.

Firmness Level

Whenever you buy a mattress online, you can read about the firmness level specified by the manufacturer of said mattress. However, don’t be surprised if expert tests will reveal a firmness rating different than what you read on the website. Firmness and feel are subjective, always keep that in mind.

As far as the Zenhaven mattress is concerned, you get a firmness rating of about 4 to 5 on the softer side of the bed, while the firmer side has a firmness rating of about 7. Sleeping on the softer side might be more beneficial for side sleepers looking for more contouring, while the firmer side offers more support for back sleepers and heavyweight people.

Sleep Trial

The Zenhaven mattress is backed by 120 nights of free sleep trial. Unlike other beds, this one does not require a break-in period, which means that you can return it the next day if you feel that this won’t be a mattress you’d be comfortable sleeping for at least a decade to come.

You can also benefit from the Fairness Replacement Option, which means that during specific ownership years, you get different discounts on purchasing a new Zenhaven bed.

The Wrap Up

The Nolah Sleep Original 10 bed is a mattress designed for people who want an affordable solution and just love the idea of having a decent memory foam bed. While it may fade in comparison to what the Zenhaven has to offer, the Nolah Sleep bed is quite good amongst its fellow competitors. It’s a bed with a surface that’s soft enough for side sleepers to enjoy, while also being cost-friendly as not to exceed anyone’s budget.

The Zenhaven, on the other hand, is the perfect example of what a good latex mattress should be like. In spite of the fact that latex is often considered a firmer version of foam, this bed has a flippable construction with a different firmness rating on each side of the bed. With the plush side up, you can get plenty of conforming, while having the firmer side up results in a bed with more support. It’s a great option for back sleepers of all weight, for people who like an eco-friendly bed, but also for those who tend to sleep hot.

The Zenhaven bed features a latex construction with two firmness levels, one of each side of the bed. It’s a luxury mattress that brings forth the characteristics you kind of want in a bed that costs that much. In the end, it does seem pretty clear that each one of these two beds has a very different target market to please, so it should be easy for you to decide between these two.
