Lemon and Rosemary Oils Killed 97% of Young Stink Bugs in a Lab: But Can They Keep Them Out of Your Home?

Brown, shield-shaped stink bugs begin gathering around windows and exterior walls as autumn temperatures fall. Some find gaps around frames, siding, and doors, then move indoors to spend the winter. Crushing one can release a strong odor, making these insects an unwelcome visitor even though they do not bite people or reproduce inside homes during winter.

Lemon and rosemary essential oils have attracted attention as possible alternatives to conventional insecticides. In a study reported in 2026, researchers Zeynep Bayramoğlu and Bahar Bal tested six plant oils against brown marmorated stink bugs (Halyomorpha halys), including the young nymphs and adults responsible for crop damage.

The reported results were striking: rosemary oil killed 97.6% of third-stage nymphs, while lemon oil killed 97.36% at the highest tested concentration. But the experiment involved spraying insects under controlled conditions, raising a different question for homeowners: can those oils stop stink bugs from entering through windows?

Researchers Tested Six Essential Oils Against Stink Bugs

The study, “Evaluation of the Pest Control Potential of Plant Essential Oils Against the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug“, examined lemon, rosemary, basil, orange, bergamot, and nettle oils.

Researchers collected adult stink bugs and third-stage nymphs from hazelnut-growing areas around Pazar, Turkey, during summer 2024. They tested oil solutions at concentrations of 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, spraying the insects and plant material inside containers.

Mortality was recorded over seven days, allowing the researchers to compare the effects of each oil on young and adult insects.

Rosemary and Lemon Oil Had the Strongest Reported Results

At 20% concentration, rosemary oil caused 97.6% mortality among third-stage nymphs, compared with 97.36% for lemon oil. Basil also performed well against young insects, with 94.26% mortality.

Adult stink bugs showed greater resistance, although rosemary oil still caused 94.74% mortality at the highest concentration. Lemon oil caused 88.21% mortality among adults.

The difference matters because the stink bugs entering homes in autumn are generally adults seeking protected places to overwinter. Results from young insects cannot be treated as proof that the same treatment will control adult bugs around windows.

The Study Did Not Test Oils on Window Frames

The researchers measured insect mortality after direct spraying. They did not apply lemon or rosemary oil to window frames, door seals, curtains, or exterior walls, and they did not test whether the scents prevented stink bugs from entering buildings.

The reported 97% result therefore cannot be used as a household repellent success rate. The 20% solutions were experimental concentrations, not instructions for mixing an essential-oil spray at home.

The authors called for further research to establish how these oils perform outside the laboratory.

What Homeowners Can Do When Stink Bugs Gather at Windows

Brown marmorated stink bugs enter buildings through gaps around window frames, doors, siding, and other exterior openings as they seek winter shelter. Preventing entry is more useful than treating the insects after they have reached curtains and interior walls.

Inspect window screens, repair damaged mesh, add weatherstripping where needed, and seal exterior cracks with suitable caulk. For insects already indoors, capture them in a container or use a vacuum and empty its contents outside to reduce the chance of an odor release.

Avoid applying concentrated essential oils to window seals or painted frames based on the laboratory findings. The research does not establish an effective household dose, and some oils can damage finishes or create exposure risks for people and pets.

The finding worth remembering is that rosemary and lemon oils showed substantial insecticidal activity when sprayed onto stink bugs. Whether either oil can keep adult stink bugs away from household windows remains unanswered.
