Instead of Painting His Old Pine Dresser, He Turned It Into an Antique-Looking Apothecary Cabinet

An old pine dresser with round wooden knobs doesn’t have much in common with an antique pharmacy cabinet. One has large drawers for clothes; the other has rows of small compartments with metal label holders. Yet this furniture transformation made the first look like the second without replacing every drawer.

Reddit user u/kile777 took a honey-brown dresser and gave it an Early American apothecary look. The project combined dark wood stain, grooves across the drawer fronts, aged metal hardware, and new legs.

The clever part is hidden behind the handles. What looks like dozens of small drawers is a set of larger compartments disguised by the new fronts.

The Original Dresser Had Large Pine Drawers

The dresser had four small drawers across the top, with six wider drawers beneath them. Knots and grain covered the honey-brown pine, while wooden knobs and a solid plinth completed the original design.

One drawer had a mismatched metal knob, and the sides showed wear along the edges.

During the makeover, the dresser received a dark stained finish. Grooves cut across the drawer fronts created the appearance of smaller sections, with metal hardware and legs set aside for installation.

The finished fronts have aged metal card-holder pulls, each with a recessed label slot. Wood grain remains visible beneath the dark finish, with different shades across the boards.

Instead of replacing the drawers, the restorer changed how their fronts appeared.

The completed piece has eight small-looking drawers along the top, with rows of narrower fronts below. Metal legs lift the cabinet off the floor, replacing its solid base.

Opening the drawers reveals the trick. Several fronts that appear divided into separate compartments are attached to larger drawers. The grooves and metal pulls create the illusion of an antique filing system without sacrificing the dresser’s original storage space.

The transformation fooled readers on Reddit, with several mistaking the finished cabinet for a genuine antique. Some thought the photographs showed an old apothecary chest being stripped back to a plain dresser because the creator posted the finished piece first and the original last.

Others were surprised to discover that the small-looking drawers were an illusion, not dozens of new compartments.

Would you have guessed this started as an ordinary pine dresser? I wouldn’t have.
