IKEA Drawers Replaced the Deep Pantry Shelves and the Entire Room Started Working Like a Prep Kitchen
Walk-in pantries often look large but function badly. Deep shelves turn into dead zones where boxes disappear behind jars, countertop appliances pile onto the floor, and half-used bags stack on top of each other without any system.
That is what Reddit user u/The_Sun_Always_Rises wanted to fix before rebuilding this oversized pantry around IKEA drawers, prep counters, floating shelves, and glass storage containers.

Instead of adding more shelving, the remodel focused on visibility, access, and cleaner storage zones. Dark countertops, warm wood drawers, and open shelving changed the pantry from overflow storage into something that works more like a secondary kitchen.
Deep White Shelves Made the Pantry Feel Cluttered

The original pantry already had size, but most of the storage relied on deep builder-grade shelving that pushed products into the back corners.
Small appliances sat beside random dry goods without separation. Plastic packaging, oversized containers, and stacked baskets made the room feel crowded even with open wall space still available.
Long shelves also encouraged clutter because items could disappear behind each other instead of staying visible from the walkway.
Dark Countertops Changed How the Pantry Functions

One of the biggest upgrades came from adding long countertop runs across both walls.
Instead of using the pantry only for storage, the remodel created prep space for coffee machines, mixers, rice cookers, and small appliances that would normally crowd the kitchen counters.
The darker countertop also grounded the room visually against the lighter wood cabinetry and white walls.
IKEA Drawers Replaced the Deep Shelf Problem

Lower IKEA drawer systems completely changed how storage works inside the pantry.
Instead of reaching into deep shelves where items stack behind each other, the drawers pull everything forward into view. Canned goods, snacks, baking supplies, and overflow pantry items now stay separated without disappearing into the back corners.
Flat drawer fronts also cleaned up the visual noise that open shelving created before the remodel.
Floating Shelves Opened the Entire Room

Removing the full-height white shelving made the pantry feel wider almost immediately.
The new floating wood shelves leave open wall space visible between levels, which keeps the room from feeling packed floor to ceiling. Black metal brackets tie into the countertop color while adding stronger contrast across the walls.
Open spacing between containers also prevents the pantry from looking overloaded even when fully stocked.

Glass Containers Turned Storage Into Display

Clear IKEA jars replaced most of the original food packaging across the pantry shelves.
Pasta, flour, grains, snacks, and baking ingredients now work as part of the visual design instead of adding clutter through mismatched boxes and bags. The repeated container shapes also create cleaner lines across the shelving.
Instead of feeling like a utility closet, the finished pantry now reads more like a prep kitchen, coffee station, and built-in grocery wall combined into one room.
