The first step is to customize your mason jar to match your taste or outdoor decor. The jar pictured just features a thick piece of lace ribbon secured to the jar with mod podge. But if you’d prefer, you can paint the jar, add fabric, or customize it in any number of different ways. Or if you want to keep it simple you can just skip this step altogether.

Step 2: Secure wire to lid.

Remove the lid of the jar and separate the top part of it from the rim. Screw the rim part of the lid back onto the top of the jar without tightening it. Then add a piece of heavy duty wire under the lid, with two circles on each side as shown. These will give you a way to attach the rope. Once the wire is in place, tighten the lid to keep it in place.

Step 3: Hang jar with rope.

Take a piece of rope or cord that’s about a foot long and loop it through each of the wire rings at the top of the jar. Then tie the rope tightly to itself. Grab both strands of rope to hang the jar on a hook or even along a wire fence.

Step 4: Add candle.

If you want to keep it simple, just add a small tea light citronella candle to the inside of the jar. But if you want to DIY this part as well, you can melt some wax and add a few drops of citronella oil, then add a wick to the bottom of the jar and pour the melted mixture over it.

Step 5: Secure jar to hoop.

At this point, your jar and candle should be basically completed. So just take the two strands of rope and use them to hang the jar on a hanging plant hook in your backyard or on your balcony. Then just enjoy your new outdoor accessories!
