DIY Picture Frame
Building a picture frame is an easy and affordable DIY project. With simple tools and a few materials, you can create a custom wood frame to enhance any canvas print. Follow these step-by-step instructions for a polished, handmade finish.
Materials:
- Photo Canvas.
- 3/4″ (or larger) x 1″ wood trim
- Saw
- Pencil
- Wood glue
- Nail gun (or small hammer and nail)
- Tape
- Polyurethane finish
- Brush
- 90/45 degree protractor
Step 1: Trim
Cut the wood trim into four pieces, ensuring each piece is slightly longer than the canvas sides. Lay them out around the canvas to check the fit.
Step 2: Mark Angles
Mark 45-degree angles on each piece by aligning them with the canvas edges. Use a protractor or straight edge to ensure accuracy.
Step 3: Cut Angles
Saw the marked ends at a 45-degree angle. Repeat for both sides of each piece.
Step 4: Test the Fit
Place the cut pieces around the canvas, aligning the angled edges. Adjust as needed for a snug fit.
Step 5: Sand Edges
Smooth out rough edges and angle cuts with sandpaper to remove splinters.
Step 6: Assemble the Frame
Position the trim pieces tightly around the canvas. Apply wood glue at the angled joints to secure them together.
Step 7: Attach the Frame
Use a nail gun or hammer and nails to attach the frame to the canvas, nailing through the canvas sides for stability. Let the glue dry.
Step 8: Apply Finish
Once dry, tape off the canvas and apply a thin coat of wood finish with a brush. Let it dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 9: Display Your Frame
Add a wall bracket, use command strips, or let the framed canvas stand on a shelf. Your DIY picture frame is now complete and ready to display or gift!
