Ditch the Plant Pot: This Japanese Method Wraps the Roots in Moss Instead
Most houseplants depend on a container to keep soil around their roots, but kokedama removes the pot from the display. The Japanese planting method encloses the root system inside soil, moss, and string, creating a compact ball that can rest on a plate or hang from above.
Homedit contributor Stephanie Stanesby used the method with a small houseplant, taking it from its nursery pot and rebuilding the base around the roots. Moss replaces the visible container, while string holds the round form together and adds another layer to the finished display.
Plant, Moss, Soil, and String Replace the Planter
The materials show how little remains once the conventional planter is removed. A small houseplant provides the root system, while sphagnum moss, bonsai compost, and twine form the new base.
Plant choice matters because kokedama puts moss at the surface of the root ball. Stanesby recommends plants with small root systems that suit shade or partial shade, conditions that also work well for moss kept away from direct sun.
Roots Come Out of the Nursery Pot
Removing the plastic pot exposes the part of the plant that the finished kokedama needs to contain. Soil around the roots comes away, leaving a compact root system that can fit inside the new moss-covered form.
Roots that have curled around the nursery container can be loosened before the next layer goes on. The goal is no longer to fit the root mass into another pot but to prepare it for a new enclosure.
Moss Creates the First Layer Around the Roots
Damp sphagnum moss wraps around the exposed roots before the soil ball takes shape. This first moss layer sits against the root system and keeps it contained as the base develops around it.
At this stage, the plant has no rigid container at all. The root mass and moss become the center of the structure that will support the plant.
Moist Soil Forms Into a Ball
Bonsai compost gains enough cohesion after water is mixed through it to hold a shape. Stanesby notes that bonsai soil and peat moss can also be combined when prepared compost is not used.
The mix needs to hold together as a mass rather than behave like loose potting soil in a container. That shift makes the next part possible: soil can surround the roots without a pot wall holding it in place.
Soil Becomes the New Root Enclosure
The prepared soil forms around the moss-covered roots until the base takes on a sphere. Instead of filling a planter and setting the plant inside, the soil itself defines the shape around the root system.
This is the point where kokedama breaks from a standard potted plant. The root enclosure has its own form, so ceramic, terracotta, or plastic walls are no longer part of the display.
Second Moss Layer Hides the Soil
Another layer of sphagnum moss covers the soil ball from edge to edge. Once covered, the dark soil disappears and the base takes on the moss texture seen in the finished kokedama.
Sheet moss can serve the same purpose, but Stanesby used more sphagnum moss for this version. The outer layer also gives the string a textured surface to grip.
String Holds the Moss Ball Together
Twine crosses the moss-covered sphere from several directions, creating a net around the base without concealing the moss. Each pass helps secure the loose material and preserve the ball shape around the roots and soil.
The string also becomes part of the finished look. Rather than hiding the support system inside a planter, kokedama leaves its structure in view.
Moss Ball Replaces the Plant Pot
Once wrapped, the plant can sit on a plate with no conventional planter around its base. The moss ball becomes both the root enclosure and the part of the plant that would have been hidden inside a pot.

Ferns, pothos, philodendrons, peace lilies, orchids, and small palms can also suit this planting style, giving the same moss-wrapped form to plants with different leaf shapes and growth habits.
