Can Brutalist Geometry Feel This Serene? Inside the Staab Residence by Chen Suchart Studio
The Staab Residence stands apart from its speculative suburban neighbors, offering a thoughtful dialogue between material, landscape, and light.
Designed by Chen Suchart Studio, the home unfolds as a composition of sand-blasted masonry walls and floating stainless-steel volumes, positioned to embrace sweeping views of the McDowell Mountains and the valley beyond. Its sculptural forms anchor the house to the desert terrain while filtering out the visual noise of surrounding developments.
The architecture reveals a surprising softness. Expansive sliding glass panels open the main living space to the outdoors, dissolving boundaries and framing desert grasses and mountain silhouettes. The cantilevered upper floor holds the primary suite and office, wrapped in reflective stainless steel that changes tone with the shifting daylight.
The steel staircase anchors the interior with sculptural precision. Its raw, industrial form contrasts beautifully with the soft light and masonry walls, appearing to float within the glass volume.
