Crushed Stone Calculator

Crushed stone comes in many sizes and is a common material for construction projects and driveways. Use our crushed stone calculator below to determine what you need. It will calculate the volume or weight of ¾ inch crushed stone and other sizes.

Crushed Stone Calculator and Formula

To determine how much-crushed stone you’ll need, enter the length and width of the area plus your desired depth. Our stone calculator will calculate the cubic yards and tons required, accounting for 10% waste.

You can also determine the amount of crushed stone you need by making your own calculations.

Cubic yards = (length x width x depth in feet) ÷ 27

Tons = cubic yards x 1.4

You can add a ten percent buffer to these calculations for potential waste.

What is Crushed Stone?

Crushed stone comes from large rocks that stone quarries crush into smaller sizes. Unlike gravel, which naturally occurs with rounded edges, crushed stone is angular, helping it pack together in driveways and prevent erosion.

The most common rocks found in crushed stone include limestone, granite, trap rock, and dolomite. In crushed rock, there are also smaller rock particles like granite, marble, slate, and sandstone. Crushed stone comes in many sizes, ranging from about ¼ inch to more than 4 inches in diameter.

How Much Crushed Stone Do I Need?

To determine the amount of crushed stone for your project, you need to know either the square footage or length and width of the area you’re covering, plus the desired depth. Different projects require different thicknesses of crushed stone. For example, a driveway will require multiple layers of crushed stone, while you may only need 4 inches for a firepit.

Here’s an example of how to calculate the amount of crushed stone you need for a patio:

You have a patio that is 16 feet long by 18 feet wide. You decide to add four inches of crushed stone, which equals .33 feet. To figure the number of cubic yards you need, your formula looks like this:

(16 x 18 x .33) ÷ 27 = 3.52 cubic yards

To determine how many tons you need, multiply your cubic yards by 1.4.

3.52 x 1.4 = 4.928 tons

How to Determine the Amount of Crushed Stone for a Circular Area

If you need crushed stone for a circular area, like a rounded patio, you can use the following formula:

(Radius in ft x radius in ft x depth in ft x 3.14) ÷ 27 = cubic yards

For example, if you have a circle that is 16 feet in diameter, you’ll divide that in two to find the radius. If you’d like your stone to be 3 inches thick, your calculation would be as follows:

(8 x 8 x .25 x 3.14) ÷ 27 = 1.861 cubic yards

To determine tons, multiply the cubic yards value by 1.4.

1.861 x 1.4 = 2.605 tons

Remember, this calculation does not account for waste, so you can add about 10% if you’d like extra.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)FAQ

What is the weight of one cubic yard of crushed stone?

A cubic yard of crushed stone measures a 3 feet x 3 feet x 3 feet area and weighs about 1.35 to 1.5 tons.

What are #57 crushed stones?

The #57 crushed stone is ¾ inch and one of the most popular sizes. Some of its uses include the middle layer of gravel on a driveway, drainage, and landscaping projects.

What is clean crushed stone?

If a stone is labeled “clean crushed stone,” it means it doesn’t have small dust or sand particles mixed in with it.
