Where Tradition Meets Modern Comfort: KohĂştka Cottage in the Czech Mountains
KohĂştka Cottage is a contemporary mountain retreat in NovĂ˝ Hrozenkov, Czech Republic, designed by SENAA architekti. Inspired by traditional Wallachian log cabins, the home combines classic timber architecture with modern technologies to create energy-efficient living in harmony with its surroundings.
The design respects tradition with its steep saddle roof, small casement windows, and deep overhangs, while the western façade opens with large glazing for panoramic views of the JavornĂky mountains. Inside, an open-plan living area connects seamlessly to a terrace, while the attic houses bedrooms and a balcony with mountain views. A basement level accommodates a sauna, wellness space, and storage, naturally lit by the slope of the terrain.
The cottage was realized with strong contributions from local makers: wooden panels by Tomáš KrystynĂk, wooden cladding by Martin Kocurek, and interior, furniture, and sauna crafted by Robert ValĂÄŤek. These details reinforce the project’s balance of authenticity and craftsmanship.
Built with prefabricated timber panels and assembled in a single day, the cottage meets low-energy standards. It uses passive solar gain, underfloor heating, and a heat pump for year-round comfort, eliminating the need for air conditioning.
The project blends local tradition with modern performance, offering a refined example of contemporary mountain living rooted in craftsmanship.
