This Laundry Room Fits Four Machines Into the Space Normally Used for Two
Two laundry machines can take most of the usable space in a room this narrow. Reddit user u/stump36 faced a bigger challenge after his wife wanted to switch to an all-in-one washer/dryer. Since the room had space for two units, they chose two.
That decision meant adding a second 15-amp circuit and changing the water supply and drain plumbing. The project then went further. Both washer/dryer units moved onto a custom platform, while a robot vacuum and automatic litter box claimed the space below. Cabinets filled the remaining wall space, turning one compact room into a home for laundry, cleaning equipment, pet care, and bulk supplies.
Old Flooring Came Out First
Removing the old floor exposed the subfloor across the narrow room. The washer connections, electrical outlet, drain, and old dryer vent remained on the back wall, leaving little question about where the new laundry setup had to go.
The homeowner kept the old dryer connection in place but turned off its breaker. The dryer vent was capped since the new all-in-one units no longer needed it.
Patterned Tile Rebuilt the Floor
White marble-look tile pieces intersect with wood-look sections to form diamonds across the floor. Cuts accommodate the floor register and pipe near the back wall.
Getting the floor finished first gave the new platform and cabinetry a finished surface to sit above rather than leaving exposed subfloor around the built-ins.
Steel Frames Support the Washer/Dryer Units
Square steel tubing forms two heavy frames sized for the laundry units. Crossbars reinforce each section, while metal slides run along the outer edges.
These are not fixed appliance pedestals. Each section can slide out and lock in place, giving the homeowner access to connections when a washer/dryer needs service. The slides are rated for 500 pounds.
Separate Sliding Sections Keep Each Machine Accessible
The two frames join into a wide support while retaining separate moving sections. That matters once both machines are enclosed between walls and cabinetry.
Instead of dismantling the finished surround to reach plumbing or wiring, either unit can move forward on its own support. Magnetic trim covers the slide locks once the platform is finished.
White Paneling and Platform Define Three Levels
Vertical white paneling covers the appliance wall while a wide platform spans most of its width. Two large bays remain open below instead of becoming standard pedestal drawers.
The layout now has three usable levels. Floor space stays open for smaller machines, the platform carries the two washer/dryers, and the wall above remains available for cabinets.
Robot Vacuum and Litter Box Claim the Lower Level
Placing the first washer/dryer on the platform reveals why so much room was left underneath. The robot vacuum docks at floor level on the left. An automatic litter box fits into the larger opening on the right.
The robot dock also connects to a water supply and drain with a large inline filter. Those connections let the robot use its base without giving up another spot elsewhere in the house.
Two All-in-One Units Fill the Raised Platform
Two GE Profile all-in-one washer/dryer units now sit side by side. Raising them leaves enough height beneath for the robot vacuum and litter box without increasing the room’s footprint.
The lower section is built around each machine rather than divided into equal cabinets. A small opening keeps the robot dock accessible, while the larger bay gives the litter box the clearance it needs.
Custom Cabinets Fill the Wall Beside the Window
Plywood cabinet boxes add another storage zone on the side wall. A base cabinet fits between the door and window, with a tall upper cabinet using the wall above it.
The homeowner planned the lower cabinet around large bags of pet food. Upper storage provides room for detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, batteries, cleaning products, and other supplies bought in bulk.
Wood Counter and Hex Tile Add a Work Surface
A wood countertop caps the lower cabinet, creating a clear work surface away from the laundry machines. White hex tile fills the backsplash, with under-cabinet lighting running across the counter.
Keeping this surface on the side wall prevents baskets, detergent, and other items from collecting on the platform around the washer/dryer units.
Cabinetry Fills the Space Behind the Door
The narrow wall behind the door gains a floor-to-ceiling cabinet setup without blocking the window. A tall upper cabinet sits above a lower cabinet topped with a light wood counter.
White hex tile covers the backsplash between them, turning the unused strip of wall into another place for storage and a work surface. The homeowner planned the cabinets for bulk supplies, cleaning products, and large bags of pet food.
Upper Cabinets Finish the Laundry Wall
White cabinet doors with long metal pulls conceal the upper storage. Trim around the opening ties the cabinets, white wall paneling, and raised platform into one built-in structure.
Four machines now occupy the same wall. Two handle laundry at platform height, while the robot vacuum and automatic litter box remain accessible at floor level.
Litter Box Gets Its Own Pull-Out Setup
The finished lower bay houses a Litter-Robot 4 with its litter hopper. Its base slides forward so the hopper at the rear can be filled without pulling the whole setup apart.
Storage beside it holds litter, with Plexiglas lining the lower drawer to protect the wood. The robot vacuum remains exposed at floor level so it can leave and return to its dock.
Small Room Now Handles Laundry, Cleaning, and Pet Care
Packing four machines into one wall creates another problem: reaching the connections behind the two washer/dryer units. The homeowner solved it while building the platform rather than leaving the machines fixed inside the finished surround.
Each washer/dryer sits on its own locking slide-out steel frame rated for 500 pounds. If a water line, drain, electrical connection, or other component behind a unit needs attention, the platform can pull forward for access. Magnetic trim hides the slide locks when everything is back in place.
That detail makes the setup more interesting than a raised laundry platform alone. The machines were built into the room without being trapped there.
