This Curtain Rod Came From the Plumbing Department, Not the Decor Aisle
Curtain rods rarely become the detail people remember in a room. Paint colors, furniture, and artwork usually attract the attention. In this makeover, the window hardware became one of the most interesting design features.
Instead of purchasing a decorative rod from the home decor aisle, Debbie from Debbiedoo’s turned to the plumbing department. Using galvanized pipes, elbow fittings, extensions, and S hooks, she created a custom curtain rod that frames the window while introducing industrial detail.
Plumbing Parts Replaced Traditional Curtain Hardware
The project started with a collection of basic plumbing components from Lowe’s.
Galvanized pipes formed the rod, while elbow fittings created finished ends. Pipe extensions increased the overall length to fit the window opening. Once assembled, the materials looked less like plumbing supplies and more like custom hardware designed for the space.
The approach eliminated the need for decorative finials, specialty brackets, and many of the accessories that often accompany traditional curtain rods.
Industrial Pipe Added Structure To The Window Wall
The exposed metal introduces contrast against the painted wall and patterned curtains.
Rather than disappearing behind the fabric, the pipe remains visible and becomes part of the overall design. The industrial appearance provides structure around the window and helps anchor the curtain panels.
Black and galvanized pipe continue to appear in shelving, lighting, furniture, and home accessories because the material pairs well with wood, painted surfaces, textiles, and vintage furnishings.

S Hooks Solved The Hanging System
Instead of curtain rings, Debbie used simple S hooks to support the curtain panels.
The hooks slide across the pipe while maintaining the industrial appearance of the hardware. The solution required very few components and matched the exposed metal finish of the rod.
Small details such as the hooks and elbow fittings contribute to the finished appearance and help the installation look complete.
Custom Appearance Without Custom Hardware Pricing
Decorative curtain hardware can become expensive, especially for larger windows that require longer rods and additional accessories.
Using plumbing components allowed Debbie to create a custom-sized curtain rod with materials available from a local hardware store. The finished installation delivers a distinctive appearance while avoiding the cost of many decorative curtain rod systems.
The project demonstrates how solutions can come from unexpected departments. A handful of plumbing parts became a functional window treatment and one of the most memorable details in the room.
