The Ideal Height for Lamps Above a Dining Table
Lighting above the dining table needs to be functional and comfortable. The lamp should provide enough light without blocking the view or getting in the way.
Standard Height
The general rule is to hang a lamp so the distance from the tabletop to the bottom of the lamp is about 70–80 cm. At this height, the lamp lights the table evenly, doesn’t obstruct eye contact across the table, and avoids the risk of bumping your head when sitting down or standing up.
Adjusting for Ceiling Height
For a standard ceiling of 2.5 m, the 70–80 cm rule works well. If you have higher ceilings, you can hang the lamp slightly higher to keep proportions balanced. For lower ceilings, shorten the suspension so the lamp stays comfortable and practical.
Testing Before Installation
Since not everyone at the table is the same height, it’s best to test the lamp position before fixing it permanently. Sit and stand at the table to ensure the lamp feels right from all angles and provides enough light coverage.
Multiple Lamps
If you’re installing several lamps above the table, keep the same 70–80 cm height from the tabletop and make sure they are evenly spaced. A good guideline is about 70 cm between each lamp for even light distribution.
